It’s a powerful realization to know you have emotionally immature parents.

Things become much less personal, and you can finally heal.

But there’s also a lot of confusion, because when you understand emotional immaturity, you understand it’s not something you can change or fix. You understand that your parents can love you, but they have a limited capacity. And you’ll never develop the intimacy or true knowing you wish you had with them.

And that’s ok.

It’s ok to grieve. It’s ok to release the vision of who you wish they could be and accept who they are.

That’s a gift for all of you

One of the most disturbing things a parent can do is turn their child into a story.

I see it constantly.

They build a narrative. They tell relatives and friends. And then they repeat the same version of events until it feels like unquestionable truth.

What always fascinates me about this process is the certainty.

The certainty that they know why their child feels the way they do.

The certainty that they know what their child’s behaviour means.

The certainty that they know the whole story.

That “certainty” itself becomes its own form of self-indulgence.

And the real tragedy? The child then grows up feeling a constant need to defend themselves.

To somehow convince people (and themselves) that they are more than the story their own PARENTS told about them.

Any parent who values protecting their reputation over protecting their child’s dignity has lost sight of the role entirely.
