Growing Lungs Need Extra Protection on Poor Air Quality Days

Children are more vulnerable to poor air quality because their lungs are still developing and they breathe faster than adults, taking in more air relative to their body weight, which means they also inhale more pollutants per breath.

When air quality is poor:

✅Check the Air Quality Index (AQI) before heading outside. Apps like AirNow or IQAir make it easy to monitor conditions.

✅Keep windows and doors closed. Use air conditioning if available and avoid window fans that pull outdoor air inside.

✅Run a certified HEPA air purifier in your child’s bedroom or the room where they spend the most time.

✅Keep your child hydrated throughout the day.

✅Use your car’s recirculate setting (not fresh air intake) when driving through smoky or heavily trafficked areas to reduce exposure inside your vehicle.
