The next part

Everything flows thru a doorway, In the middle of our hearts; slouching towards infinity. We breathe and exhale, sometimes, only sluggishly. Sometimes through fiercely beating hearts. We are gone in only a moment. When you depart open your arms wide, remember to exhale. Make sure your eyes are open for this next part.

Quiet

Quiet Snow falls silently just touching the ground. Without a whisper The wind, sometimes, howls around it. Snow owls' yellow eyes peer through it. Kids will wake up to it saying, “Hello” They might scream with anticipation Of the sledding which may come next. Sometimes kids fall off and land in the soft cold. They laugh their heads off, lying back and make snow angels,...

3/14/2024 For a while now I have liked to imagine driving the dead around like a chauffeur as I drive the streets of Chicago. Specifically, I drive my dead relatives around while they usually smoke Winstons or Menthol Lights and chat with me. Being a respectful descendant, I have tried to keep the back seat tidy for them. Today, my brother in law, Rusty, opened the door and climbed into the back seat of my Ford Fusion....

Revised 11/25/23 For DAD What does the air feel like to you when you can’t feel your skin? Do you feel numb or do you feel starlight? Can you still enjoy reading the New York Times or feel the breeze on your face? Can you see distinct colors or do you see the world as energy? Can you tap your foot to the rhythm of some Dylan tune?...

12/17/24 12/17/24 I was driving down the road pretending that I was riding the moon home down Montrose ave and trying not to speed. I listened to Court and Spark and started to sing it. I heard a voice come through saying that she thought I could write a good song. I responded, “ What?” What are you talking about? It seemed like the voice inferred that she was Joni Mitchell, an octogenarian who lived in Los Angeles, not in my head....

2/22/23 The moon walks down Montrose Avenue. She touches the iron gates and fences along her way. She touches the softness of the cypress and spruce. She wants to smoke a cigarette but instead just spits. "How did she get here?" she grumbles to herself. It was supposed to be just a visit. A human had called up to her with a sweet voice on a cold night....

10/29/24 The grapevine and the wisteria in the backyard vie for the light's attention. They twist and turn over the trellis. They wait for the other to let go. The grape vine's leaves turn yellow right before they drop. The wisteria is wrapped around its delicately strong brambles. They are intertwined refusing to give up their supremacy. They don't remember when they were free from each other searching for more light. Despite their efforts the only one remaining will be the rusty metal chimes that continue to sing long into winter.

Covid revisited. I tested positive for a week. It was only just yesterday that I tested negative. I need to wait until tomorrow to test again and swab the inner workings of my sinuses. It is such an old custom now to use the nasal swab. What can we get used to these days? I used to be so fearful of getting Covid....
