Something big happened in mental health this week, and most people have no idea.
Some of the biggest insurance companies in the country now own the system that stores and manages therapist information and helps determine who gets into insurance networks and who shows up in provider directories.
Why should you care?
Because when the same companies control more and more of the system, regular people usually end up with fewer choices.
You should have the ability to choose who you trust with your mental health.
You shouldn’t have to be funneled toward a handful of giant corporations or tech platforms.
You should be able to find a therapist who:
Is the right fit for you.
Has the experience you need.
Isn’t answering to investors or corporate quotas.
Knows your community.
Can build a relationship with you over time.
We’ve seen this happen in other industries. More consolidation almost never means more choices for consumers.
So if you’re looking for a therapist, don’t just click the first name that pops up online. Do this instead:
Look local.
Visit websites.
Read about the therapist.
Talk to people.
Find someone you actually connect with.
Because therapy is too important to be reduced to an algorithm.
And your mental health should never be treated like a commodity.
