Thank you and for having me speak on the panel yesterday. It was a great opportunity to educate employers and important stakeholders on what it means to truly be a value-based center and a Center of Excellence (COE). 💪🏼

A milestone in my career was achieved on September 10, when I was inducted into the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators of the American College of Surgeons.

This distinguished Academy represents surgeons who have made extraordinary commitments and sacrifices—inside and outside the operating room—to teach the next generation what it takes to become an impeccable surgeon.

The timing of this honor is as exciting as it is challenging, as we navigate the traditional path of surgical education in the era of Artificial Intelligence.

Through the disruption however, what remains clearest to me, and most critical, is the heart of the educator and the will of the learner.
Technology matters. Where you start matters. Resources matter. But great education has always been about something more.

Decades ago, in what is still called the “third world,” my parents, my sister ❤️, and my medical school gave me the best education possible, with very few tools, thousands of miles away from the Ivy League schools. And I came out OK!

I can only hope I can do the same for my own kids—my most valuable students—who even sacrificed their volleyball 🙄 to attend this extra-long ceremony 🤣.

Our mission is not to resist the new technology, nor to allow it to define how we educate. It is to adapt it, adopt it, and make it work for us in the way we, as surgeon educators, know best.

Only then can we raise the next generation of surgeons, equipped with the best technology in the operating room, ave ultimately achieved the best possible outcomes for our patients. 🙌

Standing on the global stage is as glamorous as it is humbling. I spent last week teaching, learning, and building bridges with surgeons and physicians from all over the world as we brainstormed around the best way to approach patients with obesity, diabetes, and metabolic disorders.
The International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders IFSO meeting IFSO 2026 TORONTO was another resounding success, bringing together the best and brightest to navigate this year of rapid disruption, advancement, and needed transformation in our field.
While opinions were many, the path forward was clear: comprehensive programs delivering multimodal, patient-centric care must be the standard.

I am deeply honored to have served as a Visiting Professor at Rush University Medical Center Rush University, where I shared insights on the paradigm shift in general surgery career choices, and discussed strategies for navigating the chaos of the healthcare economy. It was truly rewarding to chat with the faculty, general surgery residents, and medical students.
