There are a number of unlicensed people operating funeral services and funeral homes. However, at some point in the arrangement process, you should meet the licensed funeral director. It is a felony for UNLICENSED funeral professionals to make funeral arrangements.
This situation is one in which arrangements were made but the final disposition was not made. Could it have been due to the low pricing that there was no money left to make the final disposition? Funerals with cremation costs approximately $7,300. Direct cremations cost close to $3,100. This pricing is not taking advantage of the public. It is the cost of doing business. Finally, funeral homes MUST STOP transferring beloveds under their care until they know how they will be paid.
Cook County Medical Examiner has made it clear that if you take that beloved under your care and you discover they are without resources and you cannot obtain all the required signatures for cremation, the funeral home must bury at their expense. I have been very vocal about how unfair this policy is, but that is their policy. Funeral homes must stop under cutting one another and allow beloveds to go to the Medical Examiner's Office until the financial terms can be arranged. Hopefully these small changes in business will prevent funeral homes from finding themselves a news item. This is deplorable and a stain on the profession.
