Shemiah Derrick, LCPC, CADC Clinical Psychotherapist

I'm a licensed therapist, Certified Gottman Therapist®, divorce mediator, speaker, and author dedicated to changing how people learn about relationships. By translating relationship science into relatable, real-life conversations, I help people better understand the research behind healthy relationships—and how to apply it in everyday life. Whether through couples intensives, speaking engagements, mediation, or educational content, my goal is to make evidence-based relationship education more accessible.

When your partner shuts down during a conversation, your instinct might be to push harder to get them to engage. But please don't - it usually doesn’t help. 😬

Sometimes the best move is to slow the conversation down, give each other a chance to regulate, and come back to it when you can actually hear each other. Easier said than done sometimes, I know!

The goal isn’t to avoid the conversation. It’s to have it in a way that helps you both to feel heard and understood. That's a win-win.

Shared identity DOES NOT mean shared experience.

Sometimes when we share an identity with someone, we actually get less curious because we think we already understand.

That can show up in clinical supervision too.

This is exactly the kind of conversation we’re getting into in Supervision for the Culture on October 16.

Live + virtual | 2.5 NBCC CE hours
Early bird is $89 through tomorrow with code SUPERVISION10.

If you keep having the same argument, the topic is only half the story.

The dishes. The budget. The in-laws. The phone. Those things matter. But what happens between you and your partner when conflict shows up is the key.

Who pushes? Who shuts down? Who gets defensive? Who feels dismissed?

Understanding the pattern can change how you communicate, solve problems, and work as a team.
Pay attention to what you’re arguing about AND HOW you argue about it.

I’ve been sitting on this idea for a while. 💕

I love teaching. I love supervision. And I’ve spent too much time in trainings where “culture” is mentioned once or not at all. And frankly, I want a refund💰😂

If you know me, you know that if it’s not quality, I’m going to make it so.

So I decided to build something different.

As an Approved NBCC Continuing Education Provider, I’m excited to officially introduce Continuing Education for the Culture™!

And it feels especially fitting that the first training is Supervision for the Culture: How Identity Shapes the Supervisory Relationship.

As a therapist, supervisor, and professor, I translate what we learn in textbooks and theories into what actually happens in real life for clients, students, and therapist colleagues.

We’re going to have some GOOD conversations with this one. 👀

Registration is officially open! 💕 --> https://shemiah-s-site.thinkific.com/products/courses/supervision-for-the-culture

A little look at the 2026 HBCU Football Classic Teen Fair with my team 🏈 And when is in the building, you know it’s a TIIIMMME! And you know our giveaway game is top tier! 😂

Good energy and great conversations! Participants loved spinning the wheel and naming their “Flag on the Play.” We loved getting to connect with teens, families, and community partners!

Always a good day when Profound Peace gets to take the work beyond the therapy room 💛

There’s something about watching a couple come into session and realize they’ve actually been using the tools. 😂 Look at GAWD!

The conversation hits totally different. They can catch an old pattern before it takes over. They tried something we practiced and it actually helped. Imagine that?!?

That’s the part people miss about couples therapy. The progress doesn’t just happen in the room. The REAL work happens between sessions. And when you come back and I can see that the work is working? Me and my blood pressure thank you. 😂

Cultural competence matters in couples therapy because there is no one specific way that couples communicate, especially during conflict.

What sounds heated in one relationship may be completely typical in another. Tone, volume, directness and emotional expression can mean very different things depending on the people in the relationship.
That doesn’t mean you can just do or say whatever! Harmful communication is still harmful. But before a therapist labels a couple’s communication as unhealthy or decides what needs to change, we have to understand the context and nuances of their relationship.

Good couples therapy isn’t about teaching every couple to communicate the same way. It’s helping couples understand their patterns, identify what's causing disconnection and create ways of navigating conflict that work for them.

What’s something about the way you and your partner communicate that probably wouldn’t make sense to anyone else?

I consider time to be a gift that I want to honor. Before every training or presentation, I ask myself one question: "What do I hope people are still thinking about a week from now?"

Slides matter. Research matters.
But what matters most is whether people leave with something they can carry into their everyday lives.

That was my goal as I prepared to open the Annual Conference, and I'm grateful for every opportunity to share this work.

This week, I had the privilege of helping open the The NABCJ Annual Conference in Tampa, Florida.
It was an incredible opportunity to share a message I'm deeply passionate about with criminal justice professionals of color from across the country.

Conversations like these remind me why I love teaching, speaking and translating relationship science into practical tools people can actually use.

Looking forward to sharing a few moments from the experience!

Moving how you WANT to is soul care at its finest. You don't have to pick one way to be. You have the right to decide the energy you want to bring to every situation.

Need to stand on business, give others something to pay attention to.
Need to fall back and mind your business, let others carry on with the shenanigans.
Need to pour into yourself, lean into softness whenever needed - no questions asked.

Structure is helpful and healthy but not at the expense of your wellbeing.
