Honoring you this Mother’s Day. We are all here because of our mothers. We are all in this beautiful, wild, painful, evolving life because life ushered us in through our mothers.

We are thankful for the mothers who did the best they could. We are thankful for the mothers who keep trying every day to be everything for those they love, including themselves. We honor single moms – you are incredible! And moms of fur babies, and those who mother others with their love, attention, and support!

We see those of you who are grieving, those of you who wanted the children you never got to have, those of you who are estranged from their mothers or their children, those of you who experienced abuse from the person you wanted to love the most.

💕we are sending hugs, love, and support to all of you who are celebrating and all of you who are hurting💕

One of the cost of depression is that it leaves us in an isolated, lonely, painful silo. We see you and your pain. Please reach out, we are here to help. www.beverlytherapists.com

“When you come out of the grips of a depression there is an incredible relief, but not one you feel allowed to celebrate. Instead, the feeling of victory is replaced with anxiety that it will happen again, and with shame and vulnerability when you see how your illness affected your family, your work, everything left untouched while you struggled to survive. We come back to life thinner, paler, weaker … but as survivors. Survivors who don’t get pats on the back from coworkers who congratulate them on making it. Survivors who wake to more work than before because their friends and family are exhausted from helping them fight a battle they may not even understand. I hope to one day see a sea of people all wearing silver ribbons as a sign that they understand the secret battle, and as a celebration of the victories made each day as we individually pull ourselves up out of our foxholes to see our scars heal, and to remember what the sun looks like.”

Our nervous systems are overtaxed from the daily stress we perceive, past traumas that never fully healed, and constant inflaming news. Yesterday we covered the basics of box breathing and 5–4–3-2–1 mindfulness techniques. Today we share 4-7–8 breathing as described by HeartMind Institute. Your mental, emotional and spiritual health is vitally important, and needs to be reached through body practices. We hope these techniques come in handy! If you need additional support for what is bothering you, please reach out to at www.beverlytherapists.com or call us at 773-310-3488. Your well-being matters!

The 4-7-8 Breath practice directly activates your parasympathetic rest and digest system somatically.

Here’s how:

First, sit comfortably.
Let your shoulders drop slightly.
Feel your feet on the ground.
Exhale completely through your mouth
Inhale quietly through your nose for 4 counts
Hold your breath for 7 counts
Exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 counts
If these counts feel too long for your body, shorten them. What matters is keeping the exhalation slightly longer than the inhalation. For example, you might try 3-4-6 instead of 4-7-8.
Repeat 3–4 cycles.
Why this works: The extended hold and long exhale trigger your vagus nerve, sending a direct signal to your nervous system: We’re safe enough to slow down.
Your body receives the message through somatic rhythm, not logic.

Notice what shifts, in your jaw, your chest, the speed of your thoughts.

If you feel lightheaded, return to normal breathing. Your system may not be used to receiving the signal that it’s safe to downshift. Try again when you feel ready.

Tomorrow is a day for awareness of panic attacks.

Panic attacks are truly awful to experience – it can feel like the whole body has been hijacked and catapulted into a catastrophic reaction when there’s nothing going on in the outer world to incite such a response. People can feel like they’re having a heart attack or going crazy. It can feel like a runaway train that is impossible to stop.

You are not crazy, and it can and will stop.

It helps to gain perspective and realize that you are having heightened sympathetic nervous system reaction. It also helps to do things that ground and orient you to the present.

Try these mindfulness exercises:

The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Method: Identify 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, and 1 you can taste.

Controlled Breathing: Slow your breath to signal safety to your nervous system. Try Box Breathing (inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4).

it is also helpful to get therapy to gain more insights into your dynamics, triggers, and what helps you calm and regulate your nervous system and mental health. If you would like to explore the benefits of therapy for yourself and/or your loved ones, visit us at www.beverlytherapists.com or call our main number at 773-310-3488 to be connected with a therapist.
