The National Rosacea Society (NRS) is the world's largest nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of the estimated 16 million Americans who suffer from this widespread but poorly understood disorder. Through education and advocacy, our mission is threefold:
• To raise awareness of rosacea.
• To provide public health information on the disorder.
• To encourage and support medical re

search that may lead to improvements in its management, prevention and potential cure. In 1992, rosacea was considered a rare disease, and its first treatment had recently been approved as an orphan drug by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the belief that fewer than 200,000 Americans suffered from it. It soon became evident, however, that rosacea affected the lives of untold millions, who had previously failed to realize they had a medical condition that could be treated. Through public awareness efforts by the NRS, an ongoing surge of media coverage that began in the 1990s brought a tidal wave of rosacea patients to dermatologists, who were increasingly able to diagnose and treat this chronic and often complex condition. Because the cause of rosacea is unknown and there is no cure, at the end of the decade the NRS instituted a grants program dedicated to encouraging and supporting medical research that might lead to improvements in its treatment, management and potential prevention. Supported entirely by donations from individuals, the research grants program has awarded more than $1.6 million to fund 73 medical scientific studies to date. To provide a basis for meaningful scientific investigation, the NRS organized a consensus committee and review panel of 21 medical experts to establish a standard definition and classification system for rosacea, published in 2002, as well as a standard grading system published in 2004. As follow-up, an NRS consensus committee and review panel of 26 medical experts published standard management options for rosacea in 2009. In 2017, an updated classification and pathophysiology of rosacea was published, reflecting the increased understanding of the disease and its progression gained in the 15 years since the original classification was published, and in 2019 updated standard management options were published. Meanwhile, through the generous support of an increasing number of companies committed to rosacea, the NRS has been able to continue its extensive outreach and educational activities at no cost to its members. Today the NRS provides educational services to more than 2.3 million people with rosacea each year, and conducts awareness activities that have reached a total audience exceeding 400 million annually. Most importantly, through the commitment of rosacea sufferers, physicians, medical science and industry, an expanding array of therapies for the various signs and symptoms of rosacea is now available or on its way. Batter up...summer is here! If you plan to take yourself out to the old ballgame, make sure your sun protection savvy is on point. Properly protect yourself to avoid flare-ups and sun damage.

• Cover Up—Support the home team while staying shaded with a wide-brimmed hat bedazzled with the team colors and logo. Accessorize with sunglasses and similar cover. Be sure to keep cool with ice water or another cold drink to reduce your body temperature as well.

• Choose the Right Sunscreen—Check the sun protection factor (SPF) on your sunscreen and select SPF 15 or higher. Sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium oxide reflect rather than absorb UV rays, reducing heat and flare-ups. Don’t dismiss using a gentler, non-irritating pediatric or moisturizing sunscreen either.

• 30-Minute Rule—Apply sunscreen a half hour before heading out to the game. This gives it a chance to provide optimal protection. As the game proceeds, reapply it every two hours, since sweating causes sunscreen to wear off.

• Don’t Skimp—Cover all exposed skin—face, neck, ears, arms, legs, and the top of your head if necessary. A ¼ cup to a ½ cup of sunscreen should cover the average adult’s body. Use that much (and possibly a little more) to attain the maximum coverage and benefits. Lips need protection too, so look into sunscreen lip balms.

• Have a Good Time—If stress is a trigger for you, try to relax while you enjoy the great American pastime!

Rosacea can affect one’s mental health, its physical symptoms taking a toll on self-confidence and self-esteem. Here are a few actions to take to manage the psychological aspects of rosacea.

• Accept that you have a medical condition, but one that can be controlled through medical therapy and avoiding triggers.
• Remember, you are not alone. More than 16 million Americans have rosacea. That’s a big support group, easily found on- and off-line!
• Surveys and studies show that, generally, when rosacea symptoms are successfully addressed, emotional health is restored as well.
• Don’t believe the hype: rosacea’s symptoms are not caused by poor hygiene or excessive drinking, and it’s not contagious either. Make sure others know this as well.
• Take care of your mental health too! Fight feelings of isolation by reaching out to friends and family, and seek out a therapist if you’re feeling especially vulnerable.

Rosacea treatment can involve more than pills and lotions. A conspicuous disorder like rosacea can have a tremendous psychological impact too. Sometimes called the father of American psychology, philosopher William James “...took philosophy out of the academy and into the street… [making it] useful to ordinary citizens who wished to understand their minds and to improve their lives” (from the National Endowment for the Humanities website). Several studies have shown rosacea’s physical symptoms may lead patients to experience anxiety, depression, and other psychiatric disorders. If you feel rosacea is putting your mental wellness at risk, there’s no stigma in seeking help. And always keep James’ words in mind—as difficult as things might get, inner strength helps us get through the worst of times!
