Sometimes, we don’t recognize what depression can look like. And when someone we care about is struggling, we may wonder how to help.

October is Depression Awareness Month, a reminder to look beyond assumptions and make room for honest conversations.

We can start by listening without rushing to give advice, taking someone’s concerns seriously, and offering practical help with finding professional support.

You don’t need to understand every part of someone’s experience to treat them with care.

At Pilsen Wellness Center, we believe greater understanding can help more people feel comfortable reaching out.

“What would I even talk about?”

If you’ve been considering therapy, this question may sound familiar. Maybe there’s something specific on your mind. Maybe you’ve been feeling overwhelmed and can’t quite explain why.

You can bring that uncertainty into the conversation. You can ask questions, take a pause, or start with something that happened this week.

We put together a few notes for anyone wondering what to say in a first session. Take a look through, you might find a starting point that feels like yours. đź’™

“You can take your time.”
“I believe you.”
“What would help you feel more comfortable?”

Feeling supported can begin with words like these, and with the patience to mean them.

When someone shares something difficult, we may feel the urge to offer advice right away. Sometimes, what they need first is room to speak, ask questions, or pause without feeling rushed.

At Pilsen Wellness Center, we believe everyone deserves that kind of care: respectful, compassionate, and responsive to their experiences.

We’re honored to share that Pilsen Wellness Center received the 2026 Cook County Community Impact Award yesterday! 💚

This recognition celebrates our work serving and supporting the Hispanic/Latine community across Cook County. We’re grateful for the nomination and to Cook County for recognizing the impact of this work.

Most of all, we thank the young people, families, and communities who place their trust in us every day. This award belongs to the people who make that work possible. ✨

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.

Talking about su***de can feel uncomfortable, but silence can make it even harder for someone to ask for help.

A compassionate conversation can create a safe space for someone to share what they are experiencing and connect with support.

You don’t need to have all the answers. Start by asking. Listen without judgment. Stay present. Help them reach someone who can support them.

You are not alone. We are here.

Have you ever said “yes” because saying “no” felt too uncomfortable?

People-pleasing isn’t always about being “too nice.” Sometimes, it can come from a fear of disappointing others, creating conflict, or being rejected.

What once helped you feel safe may now make it difficult to recognize and express your own needs.

Setting boundaries doesn’t make you unkind. You can care about others without abandoning yourself. 💛

Today, our Stone Park team stands together in remembrance, awareness, and hope. đź’ś

On International Overdose Awareness Day, we honor the lives lost to overdose, recognize the grief carried by families and loved ones, and stand with those whose lives have been impacted by substance use.

As we release this balloon, we remember those who are no longer with us and reaffirm our commitment to a future where compassion, support, and recovery are always within reach.

Every life matters. Every story matters. And every person deserves support without stigma.

September is National Recovery Month. đź’ś

Recovery is possible, and no one should have to walk that journey alone. This month, we celebrate the strength of individuals in recovery, honor the people who support them, and continue working to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and substance use.

Every journey is different. Every step forward matters.

Recovery starts with support.
