Schoolhouse will be making homemade tortillas/quesadillas again this year!

Festival del Niño is a beloved tradition at the National Museum of Mexican Art, inspired by Día del Niño, a celebration that recognizes the joy, value, and importance of children in our communities.

This free family-friendly festival is all about coming together to celebrate kids with games, activities, health services, and plenty of fun for everyone. It’s a day filled with culture, connection, and community spirit.

We hope you’ll join us and help spread the word about this special event!

☀️🍳 Summer with the Mobile Kitchen Project is served!

Chicago’s partner for hands-on culinary programming for kids rolls into schools with everything we need (everything but the kitchen sink 😄). We transform classrooms into joyful cooking spaces where students build real kitchen skills, explore food, culture, and the environment, and gain confidence through kid-tested recipes.

From sweet summer treats to fresh veggie-packed meals and globally inspired dishes, our menus are designed to keep kids curious, creative, and excited to cook. 🌎🥕

It’s more than cooking—it’s food literacy, teamwork, and confidence that lasts a lifetime.

Flatbreads are a staple in many cultures worldwide, each with its own unique preparation, ingredients, and flavors.

Here are a few we prepare in cooking classes:

• Naan (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan) – A soft, leavened bread traditionally cooked in a tandoor.

• Tortilla (Mexico, Central America) – A thin flatbread made from either corn or wheat, used for tacos, burritos, and more.

• Lavash (Armenia, Iran, Turkey) – A soft, thin flatbread often used for wraps.

• Injera (Ethiopia, Eritrea) – A spongy, sourdough flatbread made from teff flour, used as both bread and a plate.

Each of these flatbreads has a deep cultural significance and is often enjoyed with regional dishes. Do you have a favorite or one you’d like to try? Perhaps you have a favorite that isn’t listed? Comment below!

They are smiling ear to ear after baking with the lucky 5th graders at Ogden Elementary School. They make donuts while applying their knowledge of fractions.
Super fun field trip idea to explore math skills and learn how to measure and mix up a donut batter!
