A new study published in ๐˜œ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜จ๐˜บ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜จ๐˜บ reviewed more than 500 patient cases and found that patients who received chlorhexidine for preoperative vaginal preparation had 60% lower odds of developing a surgical site infection within 30 days compared with those who received iodine preparation.

Researchers Tara Samsel, Sarah Ashmore, MD, Lindsay Gugerty, MD, Samantha Neal, MD, Camara Anderson, MD, Jinxuan Shi, Kimberly Kenton, MD, and Margaret Mueller, MD, found that this simple, evidence-based approach could help reduce postoperative infections and improve surgical outcomes.

Drs. Sarah Ackroyd and Nita Lee recently published, "Exploring Decision-Making Preferences Around Treatment in Patients with Advanced and Recurrent Uterine Cancer," in the

This publication highlights the power of mentorship and trainee scholarship. The study originated from Dr. Ackroyd's gynecologic oncology fellowship research project under the mentorship of Dr. Lee, with fourth-year medical student Gabrielle Sudilovsky serving as first author after completing the project through a mentored summer research experience.

Using surveys and patient interviews, the team examined how individuals with advanced and recurrent uterine cancer make treatment decisions. Their findings underscore the importance of shared decision-making and tailoring conversations to each patient's values, preferences, and circumstances to support more patient-centered gynecologic cancer care.

This comprehensive review examines the physiologic changes associated with menopause and their impact on vulvovaginal and sexual health, including genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) and other common vulvar conditions that can affect quality of life.

Key takeaways from the publication include:
โ€ข Menopause-related hypoestrogenism can lead to structural and functional changes in the genitourinary tract, resulting in GSM.
โ€ข Vulvar dermatologic and inflammatory conditions may worsen during menopause and require timely recognition and treatment.
โ€ข Routine menopausal care should include proactive screening for vulvovaginal symptoms and sexual health concerns.

Their work highlights the importance of compassionate, evidence-based care to improve women's health and well-being throughout midlife and beyond.

Where are people turning for information about menopauseโ€”and how has that changed over time?

In a new research letter published in JAMA Network Open, Drs. James Griffith, Monica Christmas, and Francesca Farina analyzed 20 years of Google Trends data across the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia to better understand how menopause-related online search behavior has evolved.

The researchers found a substantial increase in searches related to commercial menopause products and services, including supplements, apps and bioidentical hormone therapies.

The findings highlight the growing influence of commercial content in the menopause space and underscore the importance of evidence-based clinical guidance as patients increasingly seek information through digital platforms.

New research from Dr. Brittany Roberts, published in ๐˜œ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜จ๐˜บ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜จ๐˜บ, found remote postoperative follow-up after urogynecologic surgery delivers patient satisfaction, safety, and clinical outcomes comparable to traditional in-office visits.

This systematic review and meta-analysis supports telemedicine as a safe, effective, and patient-centered option that can improve access to specialized postoperative care while reducing barriers for patients.

New research from the Lengyel Laboratory is featured on the cover of the June 2026 issue of ๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ด ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜—๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜š๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, highlighting emerging opportunities for NNMT inhibitor clinical translation.

The invited review, "Emerging Opportunities for Nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT) Inhibitor Clinical Translation," authored by Drs. Noah Puleo, Maria Francesca Allega, Claus Niemann, and Ernst Lengyel, explores how advances in NNMT biology and small-molecule inhibitor development are accelerating progress toward new therapies.

NNMT is a key regulator of cellular metabolism and has been implicated in diseases including cancer, obesity, diabetes, and fibrosis. The review highlights promising therapeutic applications and the remaining challenges to bringing NNMT inhibitors to the clinic.

The cover portrays NNMT as a methyl sink: nicotinamide and S-adenosylmethionine are washed down the drain, driving disease development, represented by cancer cells, fibroblasts, and adipocytes. A stopper symbolizes the therapeutic potential of NNMT inhibitors to restore metabolite balance and mitigate or treat these conditions.

Congratulations to the authors on this publication and cover feature!

Congratulations to Kathryn Mills, MD, of the Section of Gynecologic Oncology, on being selected as one of only 16 research teams worldwide to receive support through the Gray Foundation's Team Science Program, part of a $35 million investment in research to advance the prevention and early detection of BRCA-associated cancers.

Dr. Mills is partnering with Milica Medved, PhD, Research Associate Professor of Radiology at the University of Chicago, to co-lead a multidisciplinary research team developing advanced MRI and artificial intelligence-based tools to detect the earliest precancerous changes in the fallopian tubes and ovaries of individuals with inherited BRCA mutations. Their work aims to improve risk assessment, preventive care, and patient outcomes through earlier detection.

Congratulations to Dr. Mills, Dr. Medved, and the entire research team on this outstanding achievement!
