Meet Dr. Jakob Ackermann, one of our 2025–2026 Rush Sports Medicine Fellowship fellows, originally from Germany! Throughout his time with our team, Jakob demonstrated a strong commitment to learning, collaboration, and excellence in patient care. His enthusiasm for orthopaedic sports medicine and positive attitude made him a valued member of our department. We are grateful for his contributions and the opportunity to work alongside him. We wish Jakob continued success in the next chapter of his career and look forward to following his future accomplishments! 🦴

Great reconnecting at the 2026 AANA Annual Meeting with former co-residents Seth L. Sherman, MD (Stanford University) and Luke S. Oh, MD (Rothman Orthopaedics Florida / AdventHealth Orlando)!

We're proud of the Rush team for presenting and contributing research throughout the meeting as we continue advancing hip arthroscopy, preservation, and reconstruction techniques. Always valuable to exchange ideas, discuss innovation in hip preservation and sports medicine, and see the continued impact of mentorship and collaboration across institutions.

Congratulations to Philip Malloy, PT, PhD, on receiving the Cohn Fellowship!

As Director of the Movement and Applied Rehabilitation Science Laboratory at Rush University, Dr. Malloy’s research focuses on biomechanics and rehabilitation in femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) 🦴🏃‍♂️. His fellowship work will study early postoperative recovery after hip arthroscopy to help improve rehab strategies and patient outcomes.

Excited to see this impactful work continue!

Glute tendon tears are a common cause of lateral hip pain and weakness.

This case shows a glute repair augmented with an iliotibial band (IT band) autograft to reinforce the repair and restore function, helping patients get back to walking stronger, moving better, and living with less pain.

Meet Andrew! 🇺🇸

He came in with hip pain from a labral tear and impingement that was holding him back from joining the Navy. After hip arthroscopy and a strong recovery, he was able to move forward with his goal.

Now serving as a Gunnersmate Petty Officer 3rd Class, an outcome he worked hard for! ⚓️

Research update!

One of our recent studies, recently accepted to The American Journal of Sports Medicine, explores how body weight may influence long-term recovery hip arthroscopy for hip impingement. We followed patients over a decade, focusing on pain, function, and overall recovery across different groups. In this video, I walk through the results and what they may mean for patients.

Dr. Kyle Kunze was the most recent fellow to complete his time on our service! 👏

It has been great having Kyle back at Rush over the past few months. After completing medical school here and orthopaedic residency at HSS, he returned as a sports medicine fellow and excelled across all aspects of the rotation, including clinic, the OR, and research. We appreciate all of his hard work and contributions to the team and look forward to following his continued success.
