🎃Pumpkin Carving Injuries Are Real
Every October, ERs and hand specialists see a spike in cuts, punctures, and strained wrists from carving tools slipping on tough pumpkin flesh.
● Before you grab that knife, a few tips from our team: Use a proper pumpkin-carving kit, not a kitchen knife — the serrated edges are safer and need less force
● Always cut away from your hand and body
● Go slow through the thick spots near the stem — that's where most slips happen
● Consider a cut-resistant glove if you're carving with kids
Because the only thing we want carved this Halloween is your pumpkin's face — not your finger. 🧡👻

Your hand is one of the most complex parts of your body, packed into a small space. 🖐️
Bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and nerves all work together to give you the strength, flexibility, and precision you rely on every day.
Watch our patient education video to learn how these structures function together, and why understanding your hand anatomy matters when it comes to injury, treatment, and recovery.

The human hand is made up of the wrist, palm, and fingers and consists of 27 bones, 27 joints, 34 muscles, over 100 ligaments and tendons, and many blood vessels and nerves.

Dr. Robert Wysocki lectured with several of his colleagues (from left to right): Dr. Heather Baltzer from Toronto, Ontario, former ASSH president Dr. Jeffrey Greenberg from Indianapolis, Dr. Gregory Byrd from Seattle, and Dr. Sonya Agnew from Chicago, this past Friday at the annual meeting of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand in Boston, MA.
Dr. Wysocki was the moderator for the session, entitled "Putting the Physician in the Driver's Seat," which focused on advising fellow hand surgeons how to gain greater direct influence on the entirety of the patient experience, within health systems that have become increasingly complex and not always as patient-centric.
