💭To understand how to honor hunger, having an understanding of how our body uses and needs energy is key. Knowing the science also helps you to call out diet culture BS when you see it.
Energy is expended by our bodies in 3 ways:
1️⃣Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR): the energy used to do activities to keep our normal body functions going - things like the central nervous system, respiration, & maintaining an appropriate temperature. It's affected by a lot of different things, one of those things being, yep, chronic dieting.
🧠Look on the right side to see how our body composition affects RMR. As you can see, ~60% can be accounted for by what's called high-metabolic-rate-organs such as the liver and brain. However, we've internalized that our muscle/fat has a huge impact on our metabolism. Of course it does somewhat, but not as big as diet culture has us believe. Take this stat for example: athletes with greater fat free mass only have about a 5% quicker resting metabolism.
🌡Other things that impact our RMR are our age (⬇️ as we age), climate (⬆️ w/ temp), body size (larger bodies = ⬆️ metabolic rates), gender, hormonal status, temperature, stress, and things like caffeine, alcohol, and ni****ne.
2️⃣The next thing that our body uses energy for is the TEF: the energy needed to consume, digest, and absorb our food and store energy.
3️⃣Lastly, we expend energy in activity, which includes that used in exercise AND activities of daily living like shopping and cooking but also fidgeting, shivering, chewing, etc.
‼️HERE’S THE KICKER: This shows the reasons why you need enough food, but also a lot of weight loss programs will calculate your RMR and then tell you to eat less than that... so you not only meet your RMR needs but also not your AT/TEF needs. This is why your metabolism then shuts down + focus on doing everything it can to get you to EAT.
