Exciting news: last week, the successful clinical trial results of Dr. Ruth Namazzi and Global Health Uganda’s sickle cell anemia trial adding zinc supplementation were published in JAMA! Thanks to our funding partner Coefficient Giving - another reminder that is driving more treatments to more patients more quickly! https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2853064

We recently started funding a trial underway in breast cancer at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences - Improving Breast Cancer Surgery Outcomes with Doxycycline in Tanzania - led by Dr. Sarah Nyagabona: https://www.cureswithinreach.org/2026/02/27/improving-breast-cancer-surgery-outcomes-with-doxycycline-in-tanzania/
In Tanzania and other low and lower-middle income countries (LMICs), breast cancer is often diagnosed at a later stage. Chemotherapy followed by surgery, considered standard of care, does not always fully eliminate the cancer – especially in advanced cancer – due in part to the presence of cancer stem cells, which are resistant to chemotherapy. New, affordable treatment options for LMIC breast cancer patients are needed to reduce recurrence by killing these cancer stem cells. Early laboratory research suggests that doxycycline, a low-cost antibiotic used for infections, may target cancer stem cells. This pilot, randomized, controlled trial is testing the addition of doxycycline for 14 days after chemotherapy and before surgery in Stage III luminal A type breast cancer to help eliminate cancer stem cells and improve patient outcomes.

We are now funding our first virtual clinical trial! “Building Therapeutic Options for Meniere’s Disease with Virtual Clinical Trials” led by Dr. Danny Xu at Idaho State University. This study is leveraging ISU’s virtual clinical trial platform to screen real-world cross-sectional health databases to detect already approved drugs that could show an improvement in Meniere’s symptoms. If successful, the team may identify safe, approved treatments for future clinical research in Meniere’s disease.
