Running a 30 year old business from 700 miles away was NOT on the college syllabus 😭

POV: you’re 23, sitting in class in Atlanta… while helping run your family’s business back home in Chicago.

Between classes it’s checking sales, editing content, answering messages, planning what’s next for the store… then remembering there’s still an assignment due at 11:59. 😂

Your house can smell expensive without spending expensive 😭

I live in a 2-story loft, so finding something that actually carries from downstairs to upstairs is a TEST.

One Tribal Soul incense stick and the whole place starts smelling good. No $50 candle. No plug-in in every outlet. Just light it and let it work 😂

Nobody really tells you what owning a business actually looks like.

Especially when you’re carrying on something that was built long before you stepped into the role.

1. You are the permanent janitor.
Owner, marketer, cashier, content creator…and yes, the person sweeping the floor at the end of the day. No task is beneath you when the business is yours.
2. Prayer and solace become your best friends.
There are decisions nobody can make for you, problems customers never see, and days when you have to find your own peace before opening the doors again.
3. One customer can completely change your day.
A kind word. A returning face. Someone telling you they’ve been shopping with your family for 20 years. Sometimes one interaction reminds you exactly why you keep going.
4. Your brain NEVER clocks out.
You can leave the store, but the store doesn’t always leave you. New ideas. Inventory. Content. Bills. Improvements. Tomorrow’s to-do list. Then another idea at 1 AM.
5. Finishing something hits different.
Seeing an idea go from “we should do this” to actually DONE gives you a feeling that’s hard to explain. That little dopamine hit will have you ready to start the next project immediately.

Business ownership isn’t just being your own boss. It’s becoming whatever the business needs you to be that day.
