One moment, it felt like a sore shoulder. The next, everything changed.

Illinois forward Jason Jakstys was in the middle of his season when symptoms in his arm led to a diagnosis of thoracic outlet syndrome, a condition that can cause blood clots. Within days, his season was over and his focus shifted to treatment and recovery.

With care from Andrew Arndt, MD, at Northwestern Medicine Canning Thoracic Institute, Jason underwent surgery to relieve the condition and begin his path forward.

Today he is back to training and preparing for the season ahead. Stories like this are a reminder of how quickly things can change and how the right care at the right time can help you move forward — and get you back in the game.

When a severe lung infection became life threatening, Northwestern Medicine surgeons took an extraordinary step: temporarily removing both lungs to stop the infection and give the body time to heal.

A newly developed total artificial lung system supported the patient for 48 hours until a double lung transplant could be performed. More than two years later, the patient has returned to daily life. This breakthrough may help expand options for patients facing the most complex and critical lung conditions.

A recent operation at Northwestern Memorial Hospital was potentially the first of its kind in the country — a quadruple organ transplant performed on a person who had already had a previous lung transplant.
