Stepping away does not mean the story is over.
SAMHSA’s 2025 National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that 73.0% of adults who perceived that they had ever had a substance use problem considered themselves in recovery or recovered.
Recovery does not always follow a straight line. NIDA also explains that returning to substance use does not mean treatment has failed and that treatment may need to continue or change as a person’s needs change.
If you have stepped away from care, reaching back out can still be a next step. There is still a path forward.
