This photo on Main Street in Quincy, CA has been viewed a lot but it still has a special place in our Plumas County history.
Taken circa 1920, it captures the fascinating "in-between" era of transportation.
Look closely and you'll see:
A "cutter," (a light, horse-drawn sleigh with narrow runners)
An early soft-top auto parked at the "Auto Oils" station
A classic buggy tucked in the background

It's amazing to see the Plumas Bank building and the Clinch building have stood the test of time while the world changed around them!

Look! In 1937 the folks of Greenville, CA were dealing with a February snow on Main Street also.❄️White knuckles anyone!? Stay warm and safe out there!🧤

Fun Photo Friday! 📸
Today you see a March 1906 Shubert photo, showing longboard racers "Doping" their skis (what they called snow shoes at the time) at La Porte, CA. ⛷️
Back then, "dope" (also known as Sierra Lightning) was a secret compound used to lubricate the bottom of the longboards. It's the ancestor of the ski wax we use today.
The people who made the special compound were often more important than the racers themselves. Creating and mastering their own recipes, different ones for every possibility, wet snow, dry snow, warm weather, freezing weather, and everything in between. Each dope maker was relied upon to know which one to use. Their recipes were secret and well guarded.
Names of the people are actually written on the photo itself.

Happy 4th of July 🇺🇸!! On this day, I always reflect on my ancestors that served in the Revolutionary War. My 7th great grandfather, Samuel Whitney, served as a Captain in the Continental Army. His sons: Samuel Whitney Jr, Captain Peter Whitney (served in the US Navy), Levi Whitney (captured and starved, then died a day after his release from the British), and Walter Whitney. I am proud of these men and the sacrifices they and their families made to serve our country, which gained freedom for our nation, and set us on the path to democracy. Let freedom ring! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I grew up in this area and traveled back and forth between these two towns for decades! It is amazing to see the stage coach road back in 1907. I wonder how long it took to travel from Quincy to Greenville back then.

Fun Photo Friday!
