🌟 Weekends in Recovery: Your Recovery Doesn't Take Days Off 🌟

Weekends can be some of the most rewarding—and challenging—times in early recovery. With more free time, social events, and changes in routine, triggers can show up when we least expect them. The good news? Triggers don't have to determine your choices. 💙

🔍 What is a trigger?
A trigger is anything that sparks thoughts, cravings, emotions, or memories connected to past substance use. Triggers can be:
• Certain people or places
• Stress or boredom
• Celebrations and parties
• Difficult emotions
• Even specific songs, smells, or routines

🛠️ Coping with Triggers Outside of Treatment
When you're away from the structure of treatment, having a plan is key:

✅ Stay connected to your support system
📱 Have a trusted friend, sponsor, family member, or peer support contact ready.

✅ Create a weekend schedule
🗓️ Recovery thrives on structure. Plan activities, meals, meetings, exercise, and downtime.

✅ Practice the "Pause" technique
🧠 When triggered, stop and ask yourself:

What am I feeling?
What do I need right now?
Who can I reach out to?

✅ Have an exit strategy
🚗 If you're attending an event that may be challenging, drive yourself or arrange transportation so you can leave if needed.

✅ Replace old habits with new experiences
🎳 Try bowling, hiking, photography, sports, volunteering, game nights, coffee with friends, or exploring a new hobby.

🌱 Remember: A trigger is not a failure. It's information. It gives you an opportunity to use the skills you've been learning and strengthen your recovery one choice at a time.

This weekend, focus on progress—not perfection. Every healthy decision you make is an investment in the life you're building.

⚠️ A Little-Known Fact About Alcohol Withdrawal

Most people know that withdrawal from opioids, methamphetamine, or co***ne can be extremely uncomfortable.

What many don't know is that alcohol withdrawal can be deadly.

Unlike many other substances, suddenly stopping heavy alcohol use can cause:
🚨 Seizures
🚨 Hallucinations
🚨 Delirium Tremens (DTs)
🚨 Heart complications
🚨 Death in severe cases

This is why medical supervision is often recommended for people with severe alcohol dependence who are considering stopping alcohol use.

The dangerous part? Many people assume alcohol is "safer" because it's legal and socially accepted.

Legal doesn't always mean low-risk.

Understanding the risks of alcohol use and withdrawal can save lives and help people seek the support they need.

❓ Myth vs. Fact: Substance Use Treatment

MYTH:
🚫 "If someone relapses, treatment has failed."

FACT:
✅ Recovery is a process, not a single event.

For many people, recovery involves setbacks, challenges, and periods of renewed growth. Like other chronic health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or asthma, symptoms can reoccur, and treatment plans may need adjustment over time.

A relapse does not erase the progress someone has made. Instead, it can provide valuable insight into triggers, stressors, and areas where additional support may be needed. What matters most is how quickly a person reconnects with their recovery resources and support network.

Research consistently shows that individuals who remain engaged in treatment, peer support, counseling, and recovery-focused activities have better long-term outcomes—even when setbacks occur.

💙 Recovery is not measured by perfection. It is measured by resilience, growth, and the willingness to keep moving forward.

At Skyway House, we understand that recovery journeys are unique. Our goal is to help individuals build the skills, support systems, and confidence needed for lasting change.

💚 Mental Health and Substance Use Recovery Go Hand in Hand 💚

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, we want to recognize the powerful connection between mental health and substance use disorders.

Many individuals struggling with addiction are also facing challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, or other mental health concerns. Recovery is about more than stopping substance use—it's about healing the whole person. 🌱

At Skyway House, we believe that hope, support, treatment, and connection can transform lives. No one should have to face mental health challenges or substance use disorders alone. 🤝

This month—and every month—we encourage our community to:
✨ Check in on loved ones
✨ Practice self-care
✨ Break the stigma surrounding mental health and addiction
✨ Reach out for help when needed

Recovery is possible. Healing is possible. You are not alone. 💚

Recovery is not weakness.
Recovery is strength. 💪

At Skyway House, we believe every person deserves compassion, support, and the chance to heal. No one should have to walk this journey alone. 🫶

Behind the uniform, many veterans silently battle:
💔 PTSD
😔 Depression
😟 Anxiety
🍺 Substance abuse
🧠 Mental health struggles

The truth is — asking for help is NOT weakness. It’s strength. 💪

Too many heroes suffer in silence because of stigma. But healing is possible, recovery is real, and support is available. ❤️‍🩹

If you know a veteran struggling with mental health or addiction:
🤝 Check on them
👂 Listen without judgment
📞 Encourage support
❤️ Remind them they matter

Our veterans fought for us. Now it’s our turn to fight for them. 🇺🇸🙏
