We’re thrilled to share that our Spring into Summer 10K-A-Day employee step challenge was a success! The friendly challenge among departments encouraged caregivers to increase their daily step counts to boost their physical well-being.

First place in total steps went to The Newlyweds, Emily Blaker and Scott Ferris, representing Therapy Services (outpatient) and the Cancer Center. Girls Gluca-Gon Wild, from Case Management, finished second, represented by Micayla Dollinger, while the Step-Brothers, represented by Jake Patrick from Information Technology, took third.

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who participated in this fun, friendly competition!

Summer fun starts with summer safety. Keep a water bottle nearby, sip often and choose water over sugary or alcoholic drinks when temperatures rise. Planning outdoor activities for the early morning or evening can also help reduce your risk of heat-related illness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasizes hydration, shade and taking frequent breaks as simple ways to prevent dehydration and heat exhaustion.

West Nile Virus (WNV) is an illness carried by mosquitoes and passed on to people. It’s most common from June through September and can cause flu-like symptoms and even lead to death in some cases.

Stay safe from WNV by:
• Wearing long sleeves and pants when mosquitoes are most active: dawn and dusk.
• Wearing insect repellent when outdoors. Look for repellents with DEET, which will provide longer-lasting protection.
• Emptying standing water from household items like gutters, buckets and flower pots.
• Repairing any damaged screens you have on doors or windows.
• Using air conditioning if you have it.

Think that "heavy lifting" ache is just a normal part of getting older? It might be a hernia.
June is National Hernia Awareness Month, and we want to remind you that ignoring discomfort won't make it go away. A hernia occurs when an internal organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or tissue wall. Hernias are common, but they require medical attention to prevent serious complications.

Keep an eye out for these common warning signs:
• A visible bulge in the abdomen or groin that may disappear when lying down.
• Pain or discomfort, especially when lifting, coughing or bending over.
• A feeling of heaviness or pressure in the affected area.

At Enloe Health, our trusted physicians use minimally invasive surgery to help you heal faster and get back to your life with less pain.
