Good Morning, long post incoming. I wanted to share my thoughts as someone who has walked beside those that I loved who were suffering with addiction. If you have a loved one out there that is suffering with addiction. It can be a feeling of daily devastation, especially when you don’t know whether they’re alive or gone. You don’t know if they’re safe and the mind can really take us through a lot of awful scenarios if we’re not careful. Somehow you still have to live and function. Where do you find your strength? Where do you find your courage? What Does It Mean to Be Strong and Courageous in Christ?
When God says, “Be strong and courageous” (Joshua 1:9), He isn’t telling us to pretend we’re okay or to rely on our own strength. He is inviting us to depend on Him.
Being strong in Christ means:
Choosing to trust God even when your heart is hurting.
Continuing to pray when you don’t yet see answers.
Standing firm in your faith when fear, guilt, or disappointment tries to overwhelm you.
Finding your strength in God’s promises instead of your circumstances.
Being courageous in Christ means:
Facing each day with hope instead of giving up.
Setting healthy, loving boundaries without feeling guilty.
Speaking truth in love, even when it’s difficult.
Believing that God can redeem lives that seem beyond repair.
Continuing to love without enabling destructive behaviors.
For families affected by addiction, strength and courage don’t mean carrying the burden alone. They mean surrendering your loved one to God each day, trusting that He loves them even more than you do. It means believing that no addiction is stronger than God’s power, no heart is too hardened for His grace, and no situation is beyond His redemption.
You may not be able to change your loved one, but you can choose to remain rooted in Christ. He will give you the wisdom for today, the peace for tomorrow, and the strength for every step of the journey.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9
Whatever you’re facing today, remember this: God doesn’t ask you to be fearless. He asks you to trust the One who goes before you. Lastly, it’s important to understand that you cannot do this alone. You have to be plugged in to a faith filled community and resources that point you to Christ.
