“I think it’s just a tight muscle.”

It’s one of the most common things we hear. And it makes sense — that’s exactly what it feels like. Localized. Specific. Right there.

What most practice members haven’t thought through yet is what’s actually causing that muscle to stay tight in the first place.

Muscles don’t operate on their own. They respond to signals from the nervous system — from your brain, through your spine, out through your nerves. When there’s a subluxation interfering with that communication, the signal gets distorted. And the muscle? It just keeps doing what it’s being told.

That’s why working on the muscle alone creates temporary relief — but not lasting change. The instructions driving the pattern are still the same.

Here’s what we also see a lot: at some point, that tightness used to show up and resolve on its own. Now it lingers. Comes back faster. Feels more persistent. That’s not aging. That’s the body reaching the limit of how long it can compensate without support.

The adjustment sets a different process in motion. When the brain-to-body connection is clearer, the body has a different capacity to organize, adapt, and recover. The tightness starts to shift — not because we forced the muscle to relax, but because the system is finally communicating the way it should.

Your body isn’t working against you. It’s doing its best with the signal it’s receiving.

Healing isn’t always about doing more. Sometimes it’s about becoming different.

At our recent Decoding the Body talk at Cook Chiropractic Center, we talked about how healing often requires us to try on new beliefs, new experiences, and new ways of being.

And that’s not always comfortable.

When we change, people notice. Relationships can shift. Old patterns can be challenged.

But there’s also discomfort in staying exactly where we are.

Many of us choose familiar patterns simply because they’re familiar.

What if there is something better waiting on the other side of that discomfort?

When we choose what is healthier, more aligned, and more true for us, it ultimately benefits not only ourselves but the people around us as well.

Growth can feel messy.

Healing can feel uncomfortable.

But that doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

We host these talks to help people better understand themselves, their bodies, and the incredible capacity they have to heal and grow.

🎉 Dr. Jacob is taking over this post! 🎉

I want to tell you a little bit about why I do what I do! 👋

➡️ In ninth grade, I grew from 5'9" to 6'4"...in just ONE year.
➡️ And with that came debilitating shin splints and low back pain that made competing in track and high jump feel almost impossible.
➡️ A hometown chiropractor named Jim Nelson changed everything for me.

He not only helped me get out of pain, but he also kept me competing through the rest of high school. And when I had the chance to work in his office later on, I watched patients from newborns to great-grandparents have their lives changed in ways I never thought imaginable.
That was it. I knew exactly what I wanted to do. 🙌
One of my favorite moments since joining Cook Chiro has been caring for a first-time mother through her entire pregnancy and then adjusting her newborn baby boy at just one week old. He slept through the whole thing. 💙

➡️ That is the thing about this work. You get this incredible view of the circle of life. And every single day you get to help people understand that their bodies are self-healing, self-regulating machines with an innate intelligence already built in! 💪
That never gets old. 🙂

I am Dr. Jacob, Associate Chiropractor at Cook Chiro — and it is an honor to be part of your care!

Drop a ❤️ if I have had the chance to care for you, and tell us what you love about Dr. Jacob in the comments! 💚

Can you stand up from a chair without using your arms?

That’s not a small thing. It’s the number one deciding factor that sends people into assisted living — and it comes down to muscle mass.

If we’re not actively maintaining strength as we age, something as simple as getting up from a seat becomes harder and harder. Until one day, it isn’t possible without help.

This is exactly why we host these conversations at Cook Chiropractic Center. We believe our practice members deserve to understand their bodies — not just when something hurts, but so they can make smart choices at every stage of life.

Your health is worth investing in. We’re here to help you do that.

This is an excerpt from our Better Results Faster workshop, which we send to people when they start care with us.

When you first begin care, you’ll be coming in frequently — sometimes 2 or 3 times a week. That’s intentional. This is the phase where we go after the most robust change, working to restore nervous system function and get your health moving in the right direction.

And yes — healing isn’t always a straight line. Some people change rapidly. Others go slow and steady. Most experience a little of both. Two steps forward, one step back. That’s not failure. That’s healing.

We can’t move you to Tahiti and remove all your stressors — but we can help you identify what you can control to keep your body balanced and out of that stress state.

This is what we call active care. And we’re in it with you every step of the way.

We need to give ourselves a whole lot more grace.

There is often so much more going on beneath the surface than we realize — physically, emotionally, neurologically.

At our recent Decoding the Body talk at Cook Chiropractic Center, we talked about how healing doesn’t always require us to fully understand where every pattern or stress response came from.

Sometimes the deeper need is helping the body come back to a place of safety.

Because when the nervous system is no longer constantly reacting like it’s in survival mode… the body can begin to shift into rest, awareness, and healing.
Healing often happens in the spaces where the body finally feels safe enough to exhale.

We host these talks to help people better understand their bodies and reconnect with how they’re designed to function and heal.

If you’re ready to take the next step in your health journey, we’re here for you.

Nothing your body does is random.

That tight spot that keeps coming back. The symptom that showed up during a hard season of life. The pattern you keep dismissing.

Dr. Lona believes — and we do too — that what shows up in the body is directly connected to how well your system can adapt. To what’s happening in your external world. To your internal world — your self-talk, what you’re exposed to, what you’re carrying.

Your body is always striving to heal. The question is: are you giving it the support it needs to get there?

If you want to learn how to actually listen to your body and understand what it’s telling you — Episode 3 of Cook Chiro Doc Talks is for you.

🗓️ Mark your calendar — it drops Monday, May 25. YouTube, Apple Podcasts & Spotify — link in bio.
