Selah Wellness

Selah Wellness I am an RN with a passion for Holistic health and a belief that food is medicine. I believe that I am more than my diagnosis and so are you.

I am also navigating life as a Breast Cancer Survivor and sharing my lessons along the way. At Selah Wellness we are passionate about natural whole person healing, with emphasis on nutrition. Selah means to pause and reflect and that is what I feel we need to do more of when it comes to our wellness journey! Life can be fast paced and overwhelming at times and I am here to help you slow down and t

une into your body! Over the past 13 years I have worked as a Nurse and have trained in various areas of nursing, both holistic and westernized, which has guided me towards functional nutrition. I am amazed by the incredible things our bodies can do when nourished properly. My entire life I have been drawn to children and focusing on how to help them thrive. I have worked as a nanny as well as in childcare facilities and pediatric nursing. I believe that if we can help our children develop healthy habits at a young age, it will last their lifetime! Alongside elevated nutritional practices there is a great need to focus on spiritual and emotional wellbeing to be able to flourish. Wellness is truly a rounded experience that takes experimenting with multiple modalities to understand the needs of your body. We know that there is not a one size fits all to wellness and are eager to guide you on your journey! A little about me personally-
I reside in the Chisago Lakes area with my family. In my free time I enjoy trying new recipes and engaging my teenagers in the kitchen so they can play and experiment. My kids and I love to take our Miniature Australian Shepard (Winnie) on adventures. We enjoy hiking in the local parks as well as exploring new restaurants and farmers markets around the area. Small town living is so special, and we feel very grateful to live in such a beautiful place! Services-
Personalized nutrition planning (Adults/teens/kids)
Wellness retreats for teens- Day retreats/weekend retreats (watch page for posted events)
Play in the kitchen with kiddos (any age)- Teaching kids/Teens that food can be fun and exciting and should be explored. Reach out with your needs and we can work on a plan together!

I heard someone explain cancer fatigue and post cancer treatment fatigue in a way that really resonated with me the other day.

They said Having post cancer treatment fatigue feels like your body is filled with concrete. Everything feels heavy and like it takes so much more energy to simply move. It can be hard to move your limbs and hard to pick up your body.

It's so important to me at this point in my journey to live every single day, to experience, to feel, to find Joy, whatever that looks like, however I can.

So I 'm showing up every day the best I can and I'm doing the things and I'm trying to be there, but just because I'm showing up doesn't mean it's not hard. It's a struggle sometimes to make my body move the way I want it to.

My goal has been to get back to my normal, get back to where I was pre cancer, and I am realizing that is probably unrealistic. I don't know that I'll ever be fully back to where I was precancer, and how my body worked, and how I was able to move it, but I'm trying every day to get closer and to do more and to build strength and I know that it's getting better, but it's still hard.

So you'll see me showing up, you'll see me trying to find joy, and you'll see me putting on a smile, but just know that it's harder than it ever was before. There are many times the cost in doing an activity is great and sometimes I will pay for multiple days after an activity to let my body catch up. It's Something I'm emotionally and mentally trying to work through, as well as physically.

It's part of the journey and I am accepting this.

Thank you for walking beside me and continuing to invite me, even if my answer is "not today" most of the time.

Exercise reduces the risk of recurrence in breast cancer by up to 50%.

Every single treatment I have endured up to this point has a much lower success rate in preventing recurrence. Chemotherapy reduces the risk of recurrence by up to 23% and even less in cases like mine.

It seems like such an easy thing to do but after the trauma of surgery, chemo and radiation to your body, it is hard.
5 lb weights feel like a mountain.
Just physically getting there on the days it is hard to get off the couch is another mountain.

It is important.

It is part of my plan and I am trying my best to stick with it.

My advice- find yourself an accountability partner! I got mine and he is a keeper!

I have to admit that I am obsessed with buying books.

Sometimes, I buy them and don't read them for years, but they always jump out of the pile at the time I need them. I love knowing that I have so much information at my fingertips and there is nothing quite like holding an actual book in my hands.

I don't always agree with the entire message, but there are usually a few nuggets that I can pull from the text, even if that knowledge is a better understanding of what I do not agree with!

Trying to figure it all out but not sure where to get started?

These are some of the most impactful books I have read over the past few years!

Knowledge is power.

This journey is weird because some days I feel like I'm on top of the world, and nothing can stop me, and I'm ready to go back to so many things I did before. I have the energy and excitement of a much younger me. Then there are some days that all I can do is feel all the feelings, and a lot of times that means crying or shutting myself in.

Ignoring phone calls and text messages because I don't have the capacity to answer the questions or put on a brave face and pretend Im ok. It's all a part of it, though. It's all a part of the journey, the highs, the lows, that's where the growth happens. Where it's really crunchy and uncomfortable, and sometimes the only way to wash away those feelings is with your tears.

So here I am. Today is one of the hard ones. But I'm here, and I'm working on it, and I'm doing And all the things that I need to do to make myself feel better.

Ok, Let's talk hair.
The entire process of cutting, losing and regrowth has been a journey in itself. Hair is not the most important part of a cancer journey but as a woman, it can be one of the hard parts to navigate.
Prior to my diagnosis my hair was something I was very proud of. It was a part of my identity. I loved having long hair. It made me feel so feminine and on a great hair day, I felt invincible.
When I first got my diagnosis it was a huge panic moment. I did not want to lose my hair. It made me feel so sad and like this was another thing cancer was going to take from me. As time went on I got more used to the idea and accepted that it would likely be just another step in this journey.
I have a good friend that has done my hair for years. Anyone who has spent time in a salon chair knows that the stylist becomes someone who you confide in. If you find someone you like and stick with them they will be with you through so many stages of life. They will sometimes know things you wouldn't really tell anyone else because that chair feels safe.
I went in for a cut today because I was growing somewhat of a mullet and that is not really my vibe. I was finally able to share good news with Christi Zaccardi instead of the hard stuff she has been so used to hearing over the past few years. So this is my appreciation post for the woman who has helped me feel a little bit more like myself through this journey!
If you are on the lookout for someone to help support your hair goals through whatever stage of life you are in, go see my girl at gold and ash salon! I am so grateful for her!
