💚 Join Ascend Therapy at The Anxious Generation Discussion!

I'm excited to share that I'll be participating as a panelist at Chittenango High School this Wednesday, October 28th, representing Ascend Therapy, LLC!

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker specializing in working with children, teens, and young athletes, I'm passionate about helping families better understand the challenges today's adolescents face.

We'll be discussing The Anxious Generation, including the impact of technology, social media, anxiety, and the pressures affecting our youth.

I'm looking forward to connecting with parents, educators, and community members for an important conversation about supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of our children.

You don’t have to figure everything out right now.

Anxiety loves certainty.

It tells us we need to know how things will turn out.
We need to make the right decision.
We need to prepare for every possibility.
We need to keep thinking until we finally feel sure.

But sometimes, all that thinking isn't problem-solving anymore.

It’s overthinking.

A healthier goal isn't always getting rid of uncertainty—it’s learning to trust yourself enough to handle what comes next.

Try asking yourself:

🌿 Is there actually something I can do about this right now?

🌿 Am I solving a problem, or am I trying to make myself feel 100% certain?

🌿 What would it look like to make the best decision I can with the information I have?

You don't need all the answers to take the next step.

You can be a kind person and still say no.

You can care about someone and still disagree with them.

You can be supportive and still protect your own energy.

You can disappoint someone and still be making the right choice for yourself.

A lot of us learn to keep the peace by staying quiet, saying yes, or putting everyone else’s needs first. Over time, that can turn into anxiety, resentment, and emotional exhaustion.

Healthy boundaries aren’t about pushing people away. They’re about learning that your needs, feelings, and limits deserve space too.

At Ascend Therapy, we work on building the confidence to speak up, set boundaries, and stop feeling responsible for everyone else’s reactions.

The mental side of riding matters, too.

Riders spend countless hours working on position, technique, courses, and communication with their horse—but confidence, anxiety, perfectionism, pressure, and bouncing back after a difficult ride can have just as much impact in the ring.

That’s why I created The Equestrian Mindset—a mental-performance resource designed specifically for riders. 💚

It includes practical strategies and exercises to help riders work on:

✨ Confidence in the saddle
✨ Show-day anxiety
✨ Fear of failure and mistakes
✨ Perfectionism and comparison
✨ Staying focused on what you can control
✨ Recovering after a stop or disappointing round
✨ Building a healthier, more resilient rider mindset

As both a therapist who works with athletes and someone who understands the unique pressures surrounding equestrian sport, I wanted to create something riders could actually use—at home, at the barn, or throughout show season.

The first few weeks back to school can look like:

“I’m fine” all day…
then falling apart at home.

More irritability.
More tears.
More shutting down.
More arguing over little things.
More “I don’t want to go tomorrow.”

Kids and teens often use a lot of energy holding it together during the school day. Home is where all of that stress finally comes out.

The after-school crash doesn’t always mean something is wrong — but it can be a sign that your child is overwhelmed, anxious, socially exhausted, or struggling with the transition back to school.

Give them time to decompress before jumping into homework, questions, chores, or problem-solving.

Sometimes the best first question isn’t:
“How was school?”

It’s:

“Do you need to talk, eat, or just have some space?”

“But I’m functioning… so I must be fine.”

You go to work.
Take care of the kids.
Answer the texts.
Show up to practice.
Get the things done.

From the outside, you’re handling it.

Inside?

Your brain never shuts off.
You replay conversations.
You worry about disappointing people.
You feel guilty when you rest.
You’re constantly thinking about what needs to happen next.
And even when everything is fine, it doesn’t always feel fine.

Struggling doesn’t always look like falling apart.

Sometimes it looks like being really, really good at holding everything together.

Therapy can help you understand what’s driving that pressure and learn how to feel better — not just function better.

Educational Post: “Anxiety Doesn’t Always Look Anxious”

Anxiety isn't always obvious.

It can look like:

Irritability or getting frustrated easily
Avoiding school, sports, activities, or social situations
Procrastinating or refusing to start something
Needing constant reassurance
Perfectionism and fear of making mistakes
Stomachaches, headaches, or feeling sick before stressful situations
Difficulty sleeping or shutting their brain off
Becoming unusually quiet or withdrawn
Saying “I don’t care” when they actually care a lot
Melting down at home after holding it together all day

Sometimes the behavior we see on the outside is only the tip of the iceberg.

Therapy can help teens understand what is happening underneath the behavior, recognize anxiety patterns, and build healthier ways to cope with stress and difficult emotions.

You might not be lazy.
You might be emotionally burned out.

Burnout doesn’t always look like completely falling apart.

Sometimes it looks like:

• Feeling exhausted even after resting
• Getting irritated over little things
• Having no patience left for anyone
• Feeling numb or disconnected
• Struggling to get motivated
• Constantly feeling like you’re behind
• Saying “I’m fine” while feeling completely overwhelmed
• Feeling guilty when you finally slow down

When you’ve been in survival mode for too long, even everyday responsibilities can start to feel heavy.

Therapy can help you understand what’s draining you, set healthier boundaries, manage stress, and start feeling more like yourself again.

One bad ride can get LOUD in an athlete’s head.

“I should have ridden that better.”
“Everyone else is improving faster than me.”
“I embarrassed myself.”
“What if I do it again next time?”

The ride after the bad ride

But one round, one mistake, one refusal, or one difficult lesson doesn’t define you as a rider.

Try this reset:

🐴 Name it: What actually happened — without judging yourself?

🧠 Learn from it: What is ONE thing you can take into your next ride?

💭 Challenge it: Would you talk to a teammate the way you're talking to yourself right now?

💪 Leave it: You don't have to carry the last ride into the next one.

Mental strength in equestrian sports isn't never having a bad ride.

It's learning how to ride again without letting the last one ride with you.
