🩸 1. Control your blood pressure, it's the #1 thing you can do
High blood pressure is the second leading cause of kidney failure worldwide. It silently damages the tiny blood vessels inside your kidneys over years, reducing their filtering ability long before you feel anything. Target: below 130/80 mmHg. Cut sodium, move daily, and if you're on medication, take it consistently. This single habit does more for kidney longevity than almost anything else.
💧 2. Stay hydrated, but not excessively
Water helps your kidneys flush waste and prevents kidney stones from forming. Aim for pale yellow urine as your guide, that's the right hydration level for most healthy adults. The common "8 glasses a day" rule is oversimplified. If you have CKD Stage 3 or above, or heart failure, your fluid intake may need to be restricted, so always check with your specialist before dramatically increasing water intake.
👩⚕️ 3. Get tested before you feel anything
90% of people with chronic kidney disease have no symptoms until significant damage is already done. Two simple tests, an eGFR blood test and a uACR urine test, can detect kidney damage years before any symptoms appear. If you have high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, or a family history of kidney disease, you should be tested annually. Don't wait for pain. Kidneys don't give much warning.
