GLP-1s Explained
What's actually different between the medications you keep hearing about. Semaglutide, tirzepatide, retatrutide, you've probably seen all three names floating around, but do you actually know what makes them different?

Semaglutide targets one receptor, GLP-1, which slows digestion and signals your brain that you're full. It's the foundation most people recognize from Ozempic and Wegovy.

Tirzepatide adds a second target, GIP, alongside GLP-1. This dual action is associated with enhanced appetite suppression and, for some patients, fewer digestive side effects at comparable doses.

Newer compounds in development add a third pathway, glucagon, aiming to improve outcomes even further. Research here is still early, and these options are not yet FDA approved for clinical use.

The mechanism matters, but so does where your medication comes from. Working with a licensed provider and pharmacy means you know exactly what you're getting, every single time.

GLP-1 medications get blamed for muscle loss, but the medication itself isn't the culprit. What actually drives muscle loss is a calorie deficit without enough protein and without resistance training, the same pattern you'd see with any aggressive weight loss method, GLP-1 or not.

The good news is this is completely within your control. Prioritizing protein intake and staying active during treatment makes a real difference in what kind of weight you lose, fat or muscle.

At Optimize U, we use labs, sometime paired with body composition scanning, to help you see exactly what's happening under the number on the scale, so you and your provider can adjust your plan before a habit becomes a setback.

✨ Normal is not always optimal.

Hormones play a role in so much more than you may realize—from your energy and mood to sleep, metabolism, libido, focus, and overall well-being.

If you’ve been feeling “off” but your symptoms keep getting dismissed as normal, it may be time to look deeper. Your body is always communicating. 🧠⚡️

At Optimize U Chula Vista, we believe in looking at the bigger picture and helping you optimize—not just settle for feeling “normal.”

Balance them. Support them. Live better. 🤍

Test, don’t guess. 🧬

It’s common for men to come to the clinic already taking testosterone, yet still not feel their best—even when their lab numbers appear “normal.”

The challenge? Without knowing where their hormone levels started, it can be difficult to understand what’s really going on. Establishing a proper baseline and allowing time to evaluate how the body responds can be an important part of finding the right approach.

Hormone replacement therapy shouldn’t be a guessing game. Your symptoms matter, your labs matter, and your baseline matters.

In this video, Brian Moyer, PA-C, explains why proper testing and medical guidance are so important when it comes to testosterone and hormone replacement therapy.

📍 Come see us at Optimize U Chula Vista and let’s talk about your goals, your symptoms, and your options.

Many women are surprised to learn that perimenopause can begin in the late 30s or early 40s.

Not menopause. Perimenopause. The transitional years when estrogen and progesterone begin to shift and symptoms start showing up long before periods stop.

Irregular cycles. Sleep disruption. Mood changes. Weight gain around the midsection. Brain fog.

These symptoms are real and they're connected.

Getting your hormones checked during this window matters. The earlier you understand what's happening, the more support you have going into it.

Your labs look normal.

For many patients, those four words are the end of the conversation but the beginning of years of feeling off.

At Optimize U we look at optimal ranges, not just standard reference ranges. Because the goal isn't to rule out disease. The goal is to help you thrive.

Normal is a baseline. Optimal is a standard.
