GROIN STRAINS otherwise known as the dreaded GROIN PULLS
This came to mind today with a significant groin injury made public for the defensive backfield star, Jaylon Johnson from our own Chicago Bears.
Groin muscles significantly affect the lower back and hips because they connect the spine to the legs. They impact the lower back and hips by providing stability, facilitating movement and maintaining posture.
Groin area muscles include the following:
-The lower abdominal muscles.
-The iliopsoas muscles which is the major hip flexors.
- The 6 adductor muscles, when contracted pull the leg to the midline of the body. They are:
1. Adductor magnus
2. Adductor longus
3. Adductor brevis
4. Pectineus
5. Obturator externus
6. Gracilis
These muscles are usually injured with prolonged use or a sudden jerk on them too hard due to quick with acceleration activities like football or soccer. These sports usually involves a lot of running and changing directions quickly.
The patient may experience sharp pain, swelling, muscle spasms, pulling sensations, soreness, fatigue, or tightening near the thigh or groin. Symptoms may be minor and cause a little pain and loss of function. While bigger tears and ruptures will lead to significant immobility.
A skilled Chiropractor can differentiate
between the causes of back pain which may include problems to the previously mentioned muscles. Management on these injuries depends on the severity of the situation.
