Justine's Life With Spina Bifida

Justine's Life With Spina Bifida This is where I will be talking about things related to my spina bifida

I realize that what I am wanting to do is not considered the normal. Yes I am in a Wheelchair but I drive and I work and the next thing I'd like to do is own a house/condo, or rent a place that is all on one level and has a garage to park my van. I do not ever want to be back in low-income housing(CMHA) or live in a facility. I never been one to think of myself as disabled so in my mind im just trying to do what everyone else does. Using a stairlift to get upstairs isn't ideal and its hard on my body. Unfortunately there aren't any programs besides FHA that can help someone become a homeowner. Definitely nothing specificly for the disabled unless they are a veteran. Ok im done ranting but wanted to explain why getting my own place is so important to me.

Showing how I get into my Van. Vocational Rehabilitation paid for the equipment I need. It was a long year process of evaluations and driving lessons since I didn't have a driver's license prior. All of it was well worth it.

Working hard to make enough so that I can buy my own house or condo someday. Living back in low income housing is not a option. Many people dont realize that per SSA(Social Security Administration) your not considered disabled if you work. I want to be self-sustanting without needing to rely on certain assistance programs

Next week mental health therapy ends. Idk how im going to continue to deal with my current living situation without having someone to vent to who doesnt make me me feel like im in the wrong or crazy for how I feel. Especially when I know it will be a long time until I can get out.

Just a little something about disabled Housing. I often get told to contact Department of Developmental Disabilities. Their idea of disabled Housing is assistant living or a group home. That is a absolute last resort for me. I am trying to become a homeowner which is very rare in the disabled community unless our parents leave us a house or we have a spouse.
