Did You Know? The Catholic Funeral Begins with Baptism

đź’§ Holy Water
The sprinkling of holy water recalls Baptism, when the deceased became a child of God and a member of Christ’s Body. It reminds us of God’s faithful love from Baptism to eternal life.

⚪ The White Funeral Pall
The white pall recalls the baptismal garment, symbolizing new life in Christ. It reminds us that all are equal before God and that our true identity is found in Him.

đź•Ż The Paschal Candle
The Paschal Candle represents the risen Christ, the light who conquers sin and death. Its flame proclaims our hope in Christ’s promise: “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25).

🌿 Incense
Incense honors the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit and symbolizes the prayers of the Church, entrusting the deceased to God’s mercy.

âśť Legacy Monday - The Priest Mound

This Monday, we're trying something a little different. Alongside the people who've shaped our community, Legacy Monday will also spotlight landmarks and stories across the cemetery, starting with Section 4, the Priest Mound.

As Gate of Heaven expanded through the 1950s and 60s, the Archdiocese sought a landmark powerful enough to reflect the Catholic faith at the heart of the cemetery. In May 1968, that vision became an 80-foot obelisk, rising at the center of Section 4 and dedicated exclusively to the priests of the Archdiocese.

Why an obelisk? Its tall, narrowing form has long symbolized eternity and immortality. It's a structure that reaches from earth towards heaven.

Did you know? Mary was originally considered for the top of the obelisk. Pictured in this slideshow is an original mock-up of that design. The idea took a different form. The statue titled Mary Gate of Heaven in Section 21 was created to dedicate the cemetery to her.

Every Prayer for the Holy Souls Matters 🙏

At a Catholic cemetery, we are reminded every day that death is not the end of our relationship with those we love. Through the Communion of Saints, the Church calls us to continue caring for the faithful departed through our prayers.

Our mission is simple: to encourage as much prayer for the dead as possible. Whether those prayers are offered at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, in another cemetery across the country, in a parish church, or quietly from your own home.

We invite you to join us in praying for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, especially those who have no one left to pray for them.

Lord Jesus, through Your mercy, we pray for the faithful departed and especially for those souls who have no one to remember them in prayer. Grant them peace, comfort, and the joy of eternal life with You.

Holy Mary, Mother of Mercy, pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Amen. 🙏

âšľ Legacy Monday - Marge Schott

August 18 marks the birthday of Marge Schott, a notable figure in Cincinnati sports history whose life and career left a lasting impact on the city and the Cincinnati Reds organization.

In 1981, Mrs. Schott acquired a minority ownership stake in the Cincinnati Reds as part of an investment group led by William and James Williams. Three years later, on December 21, 1984, she purchased a controlling interest in the franchise, becoming managing general partner and the first woman to purchase a Major League Baseball team. Named president and chief executive officer in 1985, she guided the organization through one of its most successful eras. Under her ownership, the Reds captured the 1990 World Series championship, adding another memorable chapter to the club’s storied history.

Although controversial and often criticized, Mrs. Schott was a successful businesswoman, philanthropist, and longtime supporter of numerous charitable organizations throughout the Cincinnati community. A devoted Cincinnati Reds fan for much of her life, she demonstrated her commitment to both baseball and philanthropy by organizing annual fundraising auctions benefiting Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, events that regularly featured Reds players and helped raise significant support for the institution.

Through her business leadership, charitable endeavors, and historic role in professional sports, Mrs. Schott left a lasting mark on Cincinnati and the game of baseball.
