The FDA has approved "mix and match" COVID-19 boosters. Onto the CDC for final approval.

U.S. health regulators significantly widened the nation’s Covid-19 booster campaign, clearing use of extra doses of Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines and also saying people can get a shot that is different from what they had previously received.

CDC chief overrules ACIP (CDC advisory committee) and recommendations Pfizer boosters for front line workers (healthcare workers, teachers, ect)

In a highly unusual decision, the C.D.C. director, Rochelle Walensky, reversed a move by agency advisers and endorsed additional doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for health care workers, teachers and other workers at risk.

The ACIP (CDC advisory group) recommended a third Pfizer booster shot six months after the completion of the primary series for:

-65+ years
-Long term care residents
-50-64 years with underlying condition
-18-49 years with underlying conditions are recommended to weigh their individual benefits with risks

Three important notes:
1. This does not include occupations (like healthcare workers or teachers).
2. The definition of “fully vaccinated” did not change for mandates. So, if you have two doses of Moderna/Pfizer or 1 dose of J&J you are still considered fully vaccinated. You do not need an additional dose for mandates.
3. This is a third dose for the Pfizer series. This is not a recommendation for an additional shot for the Moderna series or J&J.

The CDC director and US Department of Health and Human Services still need to approve the the ACIP recommendations.

Among those that got a mRNA vaccine before, these groups need an additional dose:
* Active treatment for solid tumor and hematologic malignancies
* Receipt of solid-organ transplant and taking immunosuppressive therapy
* Receipt of CAR-T-cell or hematopoietic stem cell transplant (within 2 years of transplantation or taking immunosuppression therapy)
* Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (e.g., DiGeorge, Wiskott-Aldrich syndromes)
* Advanced or untreated HIV infection
* Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids (i.e., ≥20mg prednisone or equivalent per day), alkylating agents, antimetabolites, transplant-related immunosuppressive drugs, cancer chemotherapeutic agents classified as severely immunosuppressive, TNF blockers, and other biologic agents that are immunosuppressive or immunomodulatory
