What Does Urgent Care Treat?

Urgent care centers can treat most non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses. Through testing, with x-rays and bloodwork as needed, they can diagnose and treat the majority of cases on-site without having to send the patient for additional testing. They can prescribe medications, administer IV medications and monitor patients' symptoms to help them with diagnosing the cause of concern while keeping the patient as comfortable as possible. Urgent care centers are also able to stitch open wounds and apply casts or splints to broken bones where required. Let's start with the similarities! Both walk-in clinics and urgent care clinics offer convenient walk-in appointments and operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Both healthcare centers can work in this way because neither treats life-threatening medical emergencies. Where they are different is typically in the level of expertise and range of services they provide. As such, while a nurse practitioner or equivalent often runs walk-in clinics, urgent care centers always have at least one board-certified physician on staff. With the added expertise on-site, urgent care clinics can provide a broader and more specialized range of services than walk-in clinics.
