Think about how much you’ve learned throughout your life.

How to communicate.

How to navigate relationships.

How to recognize what other people expect from you.

How to respond when someone is upset.

Some of what you’ve learned has served you well. Some patterns may have helped you navigate difficult or uncomfortable situations.

And some may now be getting in the way of the life and relationships you want.

Perhaps you struggle to express a preference.

Perhaps you feel responsible for keeping everyone happy.

Perhaps you have difficulty tolerating disagreement or allowing someone to misunderstand you.

You don’t have to shame yourself for those patterns.

You can get curious about them.

You can understand what you’ve learned and begin practicing different responses.

Learned patterns are not permanent definitions of who you are.

F! Fawning™ is a six-month journey devoted to that process: understanding yourself, building self-trust, tolerating discomfort, engaging intentionally, and acting with agency. https://f-allthat.com/my-services/f-fawning/

You adapted. You are not broken.

And there is room to grow.

How often have you described yourself as a people pleaser?

Maybe you’ve said it with a laugh.

Maybe you’ve said it with frustration.

Maybe you’ve accepted it as something about yourself that will never change.

But let’s look at what that label actually describes.

Perhaps you automatically say yes.

Perhaps you avoid expressing a different opinion.

Perhaps you feel guilty when you prioritize yourself.

Perhaps you work hard to make sure nobody is upset with you.

Those are behaviors. They are things you do in particular situations.

They are not a complete description of who you are.

And when we treat a pattern as a permanent personality trait, we can unintentionally make it harder to imagine doing something differently.

Instead of saying, I’m just a people pleaser, try getting more specific.

I notice that I agree to things before considering what I want.

I find it difficult to tolerate someone’s disappointment.

I tend to prioritize keeping the peace over expressing my needs.

Notice the difference?

Now you have something you can explore, understand, and practice working with.

You don’t have to turn a learned pattern into a lifelong identity.

Someone is upset with you.

Maybe you made a decision they didn’t like. Maybe you said no. Maybe they misunderstood something you said.

And suddenly, you feel compelled to explain everything.

You replay the conversation. You search for the perfect words. You apologize, even when you’re not sure you’ve done anything wrong.

You aren’t necessarily trying to deceive anyone or avoid accountability. You may genuinely want to be understood.

But sometimes, the urgency to explain goes beyond wanting to communicate.

It becomes an attempt to make the other person stop being upset.

If you’ve learned to associate someone else’s disappointment with conflict, disconnection, or rejection, that discomfort can be difficult to tolerate.

So you try to resolve it. Immediately.

Here’s something worth considering:

Someone can be disappointed with you, and you can still be okay.

You can listen without surrendering your perspective. You can take responsibility without accepting blame for everything. You can allow a difficult moment to exist without rushing to erase it.

That is a skill you can practice.

And it starts with recognizing what you’re doing and why.

You don’t have to stop being thoughtful.

You don’t have to stop being empathetic.

You don’t have to stop caring about the people you love.

You don’t have to become someone who never compromises, never apologizes, or never puts someone else’s needs first.

But you deserve to be part of your own life, too.

If you’ve developed patterns of accommodating, fixing, explaining, or putting yourself last, you may have become so accustomed to considering everyone else that it’s difficult to recognize where your needs fit.

F! Fawning™ is a six-month experience designed to help you understand those patterns and develop the awareness, acceptance, and agency to approach them differently.

Through the ADAPT™ Method, you’ll explore what you’ve learned, reconnect with yourself, practice new ways of responding, and build the capacity to make more intentional choices.

The goal isn’t to care less.

It’s to stop treating your own needs as if they matter less.

What if the behaviors you’ve come to identify as your personality are, at least in part, patterns you’ve learned?

Automatically accommodating others.

Avoiding disagreement.

Over-explaining your decisions.

Feeling responsible for other people’s emotions.

Putting your own needs aside to preserve a relationship.

These behaviors don’t tell the whole story of who you are.

They may reflect ways you’ve learned to navigate relationships, respond to expectations, and manage uncomfortable situations.

And here’s an important distinction:

An adaptation is not an identity.

Understanding how a pattern developed doesn’t mean excusing every consequence of that pattern. It means giving yourself the opportunity to examine it without turning it into a judgment about who you are.

You can appreciate what a behavior has helped you navigate while also recognizing when it no longer serves your goals.

You can develop new skills.

You can practice different responses.

You can learn to make decisions with greater intention.

You aren’t required to remain the person you’ve learned to be in every situation.

There’s room for growth.

There’s room for choice.

There’s room for you.

Have you ever agreed to something before you even had time to consider whether you wanted to do it?

Maybe someone asked for a favor, and you immediately said yes.

Maybe you took on another responsibility even though you were already overwhelmed.

Maybe you heard yourself agreeing while another part of you was screaming, I don’t want to do this.

Sometimes, accommodating others becomes so automatic that we don’t stop to consider our own preferences, needs, or limits.

These patterns can develop as we learn to navigate relationships and figure out what helps us maintain connection, avoid conflict, or keep other people happy.

Over time, what began as an adaptation can feel like simply who we are.

But there’s a difference between choosing to say yes and feeling unable to say no.

You can care about other people and still give yourself time to decide.

You get to have a say, too.

😏 Wear the message. Own your space.

You know those moments when someone needs a reminder that you have your own thoughts, feelings, opinions, and boundaries?

When you’ve got something to say, but you’d rather keep it cheeky than start a whole thing? 😉

We’ve got shirts for that!

Introducing F! merchandise: cheeky boundary-setting phrases with a little sass, a lot of attitude, and messages that speak for themselves.

Because knowing you deserve boundaries and actually feeling empowered to hold them are two different things. At F! All That Wellness Coaching, we work on that space between knowing and doing.

The shirts? A little sass for the journey from shrinking to thriving. 💜

I love this list! ❤️ We should all have non-negotiables.

I’d add one more: mindfulness. It’s just as important to our emotional and cognitive health as brushing our teeth is to our physical health.

One other thought… What if our non-negotiables focused on promoting overall health and well-being instead of appearance? I wonder how much that simple shift would change the way we care for ourselves.

What would be on your non-negotiables list? Share one in the comments!
