Ascent Psychological Services is an neurodiversity affirming practice with comprehensive assessment and treatment services. We specialize in Autism, ADHD, developmental disabilities, and anxiety. We provide services for clients of all ages, from childhood through adulthood. Located in Cincinnati, we see clients virtually and at our office in Blue Ash.

Big welcome to Erica Swain, our new LISW! Erica is an incredible practitioner who will primarily be based out of our upcoming Blue Ash location!

Her approach is collaborative, supportive, and goal-oriented, with an emphasis on creating a space where clients feel safe, respected, understood, and empowered to show up as their full selves without fear of judgment or pressure to mask who they are.

Erica earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Bowling Green State University, a master’s degree in Addiction and Recovery Counseling from Liberty University, and her Master of Social Work from Northern Kentucky University. She has worked in social services and case management with dually diagnosed individuals since 2013 and has been a licensed social worker since 2022.

Her therapeutic style emphasizes building meaningful rapport, fostering emotional wellness, and helping clients develop tools that feel realistic, accessible, and individualized rather than one-size-fits-all.

This week’s article is not my usual evidence-led deep dive.

It’s personal.

This is an ode to Mental Health Awareness Month and how this interplays with PDA.

I wrote about what it was actually like being an undiagnosed PDA/autistic child in mainstream school during the 90s. The kind of child teachers described as “quiet”, “kind”, “compliant” and “no trouble at all”, while internally everything was beginning to fracture. Challenges growing up, and where I am now.

I talk openly about:
• internalising distress
• private stimming
• shame and perfectionism
• exploitation and vulnerability in teenage years
• autistic burnout being mistaken for depression
• why internalising profiles are so often missed

There are parts of this article that were genuinely difficult to write, but I know there are so many people out there carrying similar stories in silence.

Particularly women and girls who learned very early that safety came through compliance.
