“Every interaction shapes the patient experience, making CNAs and patient care techs essential to healing, outcomes and the human connection at the bedside every day.” — Melissa Beers, senior vice president, clinical operations, specialty hospitals.

Our nursing assistants and patient care technicians spend the most time with our patients. They are essential eyes and ears, informing care team colleagues of any subtle changes in a patient’s mood or ability to accomplish a particular activity. This, in turn, helps to support recovery progress and outcomes.

CNAs are at the heart of patient care and recovery.

Working alongside nursing and therapy teams, nursing assistants and patient care technicians play a vital role in supporting patients throughout their healing and recovery. They take vital signs, respond to call lights, observe and report on changes or progress and assist with patients’ personal care needs.

Above all, they encourage and guide patients with compassion, helping them stay motivated to achieve their recovery goals.

“I couldn’t say ‘I love you.’”

For millions of people living with aphasia, a disorder that impacts one’s ability to speak, read or write, early intervention with a speech-language pathologist (SLP) can help regain meaningful communication skills over time.

In observance of Aphasia Awareness Month, we celebrate the life-changing work our SLPs and clinical teams do to help people reconnect, one word at a time.

Recovering from a stroke looks different for everyone.

For severe stroke, healing may begin in a critical illness recovery hospital where patients receive medically focused care and early therapy to manage complex conditions. These patients may need to relearn how to breathe, eat, talk, walk and think clearly again.

As strength and stability return, patients may continue their journey at an inpatient rehabilitation hospital, where personalized therapy helps rebuild independence, confidence and the ability to safely return home.

Our continuum of care includes respiratory, physical, occupational and speech therapy. Respiratory therapists focus on breathing. Physical therapy works on rebuilding strength, balance and mobility. Occupational therapy helps patients return to their everyday activities such as bathing, dressing and managing tasks at home. Speech therapy addresses communication challenges, memory or thinking deficits and swallowing difficulties that are common after a stroke.

Through coordinated, patient-centered care, our nationwide network of critical illness recovery and inpatient rehabilitation hospitals support stroke survivors every step of the way, helping them move forward, regain confidence and prepare for life beyond a hospital.

On National Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) Day, we celebrate our 1,022 SLPs across the Select Medical continuum of care, who help their patients with their speech, language and swallowing goals so they are able to re-engage their voice and safely return to eating a normal diet.
