Sitting isn’t the problem. Staying still is!

Whether you’re working at a desk, driving, studying, or spending a long day on the computer, staying in one position for too long can leave you feeling stiff and achy.

The good news? You don’t always have to get up to get moving! 🙌🏼

Try adding a few simple seated movements throughout your day:
🔸Trunk rotations
🔸Seated cat/cow
🔸Neck side bends
🔸Seated kicks
🔸Heel & toe raises

Small movement breaks can help keep your joints moving, reduce stiffness, and remind your body that it doesn’t have to stay in one position all day.

👇🏼Check the comments for demonstrations and tips for each movement!

What area gets the stiffest when you’ve been sitting too long — neck, back, hips, or legs? Tell us below!

Get Moving. Stay Moving.

Parents, before the school year gets into full swing, take a quick look at your child’s backpack.

A backpack that’s too heavy or worn incorrectly can contribute to:
❌Neck pain
❌Shoulder pain
❌Upper back pain
❌Poor posture
❌Muscle fatigue

Here’s the 10% Rule:
A child’s backpack should weigh no more than 10% of their body weight.

Quick Backpack Checklist:
✅Wear both shoulder straps.
✅Place heavier books closest to the back.
✅Clean out unnecessary items every week.
✅The backpack should sit high on the back—not sagging near the hips.

If your child is complaining of pain after school, don’t assume it’s “just growing pains.” Pain is a sign that something deserves attention.

At Circleville Physical Therapy, we’re happy to help identify movement or posture issues before they become bigger problems.

Walking is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve your overall health. A regular walking routine can strengthen your heart, improve circulation, increase endurance, support healthy joints, improve balance, boost mood, and help maintain a healthy weight. Walking also helps keep muscles and bones strong, improves blood sugar control, and can reduce the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes. The best part? Walking is low-impact, requires no special equipment, and can be done almost anywhere. Even short walks throughout the day add up and can make a meaningful difference in your health!

Walking Facts:

🔸Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week — that’s about 30 minutes a day, 5 days per week for most adults.
🔸If 30 minutes feels like too much, start with 5–10 minute walks and gradually build up.
🔸A “moderate pace” means you can talk but not easily sing while walking.
🔸Walking helps lubricate joints and can reduce stiffness, especially in the knees, hips, and spine.
🔸Walking supports mental health by reducing stress, improving mood, and increasing energy.
🔸A short walk after meals (even 10 minutes) can help improve blood sugar levels.
🔸Walking outdoors adds extra benefits, including fresh air, sunlight, and a connection with nature.
🔸Consistency matters more than speed — a little movement every day is better than occasional intense exercise.

Physical therapy tip: The best walking program is the one you’ll actually stick with. Start where you are, increase gradually, and remember: every step counts!

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain, caused by irritation and inflammation of the plantar fascia — a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot and helps support your arch.

It often develops when the tissue becomes overstressed from activities like increased walking, running, standing for long periods, wearing unsupportive shoes, tight calf muscles, or changes in activity levels.

Many people notice their pain is worse with the first few steps in the morning or after sitting for a while.

Simple home treatments can often help, including gentle calf and foot stretching, rolling the bottom of the foot with a tennis ball or frozen water bottle, wearing supportive shoes or inserts, avoiding going barefoot on hard surfaces, and gradually increasing activity instead of doing too much too soon.

If heel pain continues or limits your daily activities, a physical therapist can help identify contributing factors and create a plan to get you moving comfortably again.

Common injury: Tennis Elbow

Pain on the outside of your elbow when lifting, gripping, or opening jars?

You may be experiencing tennis elbow.

Despite the name, you don’t have to play tennis to develop it. Repetitive gripping, lifting, and computer work can all contribute.

Early treatment can help prevent symptoms from becoming chronic.
