Falls in older adults are a major health risk that can be caused by several things:
❎ Muscle weakness
❎ Medications
❎ Household hazards
❎ And vision changes, which are often overlooked

Eye conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration each change what a person can see. And standard eye exams can miss the loss of depth perception or contrast sensitivity that often comes with aging.

Safe care does not stop when someone leaves the hospital, rehab, physician office, or senior community. For many families, the real questions begin once their loved one is back home.

Who will help with bathing?
Who will assist with meals?
Who will make sure daily needs are being met?

If you're caring for an aging veteran, you may have noticed something new: old memories surfacing, sleep getting harder, more worry or tension than there used to be.

It can be confusing, especially when their service was decades ago.

Here's what many families don't realize: PTSD can return, or even appear for the first time, later in life.

Retirement, an illness, a hospital stay, or the loss of someone close can bring difficult memories back up.

It doesn't mean anything has gone wrong. It's a recognized pattern, and it can be supported.

The message from the VA's National Center for PTSD is plain: treatment works at any age. It's never too late to get help.

A few places to start:
