Why Fall IVF, AI & ET Results Can Still Reflect Summer Heat

The cooler weather is finally here — but we have to remember that the cow is still recovering from summer heat stress even after the temperature drops.

That matters whether we are talking about donors, AI cows, or ET recipients.

When evaluating fall IVF, AI, or ET results, it is important to look at the previous 30–60+ days of management and environmental stress, not just what the thermometer says today.

That is one of the reasons we put so much emphasis on managing the cow before we ever ask her to make an embryo or carry one.

🩸 YOUR CALF IS SICK. YOU’RE TREATING IT. BUT WHY ISN’T IT GETTING BETTER?

The calf in this photo had a blood glucose (BG) reading of just 28 mg/dL — critically low!

A simple drop of blood can reveal a potentially life-threatening problem that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Here’s something many producers don’t realize:

💉 You can be using the RIGHT antibiotic and still have a calf that continues to decline.

Why? Because the infection may not be the only problem.

Severe hypoglycemia can compromise a calf’s ability to maintain normal cellular function and recover from illness.

But here’s the other side of the story: A calf can have completely NORMAL blood glucose and still be critically ill.

So how do we interpret these readings, and more importantly, how can they change our treatment approach?

What makes our Donor Management Program different?

We manage the complete cycle. Your donor calves with us, where we focus on a safe delivery, calf viability and adequate passive transfer. From there, we manage the donor’s nutrition and postpartum recovery to prepare her to produce quality oocytes while successfully raising her calf.

Once she is ready, she enters our IVF program to produce embryos. When her IVF work is complete, we AI her, confirm pregnancy, and prepare the pair to return home. Cow and calf leave current on vaccination/worming/multi min protocols.

He’s only TWO days old and we fully encourage this!!!

A calf nursing may be getting all the milk he needs but milk is not a substitute for access to fresh water.

When a calf nurses, the esophageal groove directs most of that milk past the rumen and into the abomasum. Water, however, enters the rumen. As that calf begins nibbling grass, hay and feed, water provides the fluid environment rumen microbes need for fermentation and normal rumen development.

Research has shown just how closely water and early feed intake are connected. In one study, calves without free-choice water resulted in 31% less creep intake and 38% less body-weight gain compared with calves that had water available. The exact response will vary with management and diet, but the importance of water to developing rumen function is well established.

This is one reason our pasture water tanks are low enough that very young calves can easily reach them, but not crawl in them!! We want calves finding clean, fresh water early, beginning to investigate feed and forage, and getting that rumen functioning as soon as possible.

It becomes even more important during Texas heat, when a calf’s water requirement increases as temperatures climb.

Don’t assume that because a calf is nursing mama, he doesn’t need water.

One important note: There are exceptions to every rule. A young calf voluntarily drinking water is normal and something we want to encourage but water should never replace adequate milk intake. If a very young calf is spending excessive time drinking water, looks tucked up, is constantly trying to nurse, seems weak or isn’t filling out after nursing, take a closer look.

Claves coming early?

We’ve seen A LOT of producers posting and reaching out about it lately and we’ve experienced it ourselves.

This calf came three weeks early.

West Texas, experienced 33 consecutive days at or above 100°F—the longest stretch ever recorded. For cows in late gestation, the lack of nighttime recovery during prolonged heat is something we watch very closely.

Cattle rely on cooler nights to dissipate the heat they accumulate during the day. When nights stay hot, they don’t get that recovery period before the heat starts again.

Late-gestation heat stress = shorter gestation, lower birth weights, altered fetal growth, and reduced calf vigor.

Sometimes it’s not just the 105°F at 3 PM that matters.

It’s the 80°F at 3 AM.

We get asked ALL the time what colostrum replacer we use … so here it is!

This is a whole bovine colostrum replacer. It isn’t made by combining alternative protein, fat, or antibody sources to imitate colostrum. SCCL uses whole maternal bovine colostrum.

Each 750-gram bag provides 200 grams of IgG in a single feeding, along with natural colostral fat, protein, and other bioactive components.

But here’s the part we think gets overlooked…🤓

Colostrum isn’t ONLY valuable during the first hours of life.

We also use it as supportive nutrition in our hospital pen for calves that are sick, weak, stressed, scouring, or recovering from illness.

We aren’t feeding it expecting to increase circulating IgG like we would in a newborn.

It provides concentrated energy from colostral fat, high-quality protein, vitamins, growth factors, immune proteins, oligosaccharides, and other bioactive components.

That matters when you have a sick calf that may not be eating well while its body is simultaneously burning through energy trying to fight illness.

Colostrum also contains oligosaccharides that can help support the intestinal environment and beneficial bacteria.

There’s even research supporting supplemental colostrum beyond Day 1, particularly during periods of illness and stress.

So when we give a sick calf colostrum we’re thinking:

Support the gut.
Provide high-quality nutrition.
Give its body every resource we reasonably can while it fights.

Medicine may treat the disease, but that calf still needs the energy and nutrition to recover.

Is it probably one of the more expensive bags of colostrum sitting on the shelf?
Yep. 😂
