Your horse feels more than your physical cues✨🐴...

How often do we stop and consider what we're communicating through our own bodies?

Are your shoulders tense?
Are you holding your breath?
Are you bracing through your seat?
Are your hands creating connection, or unintentionally blocking movement?

Our horses are constantly responding to us, even when we aren't consciously asking them for anything.

Rider balance isn't just about sitting square in your saddle. It's about body awareness, understanding how our movement and energy influences theirs, and learning to become a more balanced partner.

Better horsemanship starts with better body and energy awareness.

That's what Outside Rein Balance is about. Building strength, balance, connection, and confidence both in and out of the saddle. 🤎

Are you riding the inside of your horse and forgetting about the outside?
👀🐴

One of the keys to better lead departures is maintaining connection through the outside of your horse's body while correctly engaging the ribcage.

This counter-movement exercise helps develop that connection, engage the rib cage, and teach the horse to better organize their body. It's especially useful when working with young horses who are learning to consistently catch their leads.

⚠️ One common mistake I see: Riders carrying their outside hand too high when engaging the rib cage. This can block the horse's movement instead of allowing them to stay connected while moving forward.

Notice Emma's outside hand resting on her thigh. She's maintaining that connection and engagement without blocking the horse's forward movement. The goal is to lower the hand, connect with the rib cage, and still allow the horse to move forward.

Here, my 12-year-old daughter, Emma, is riding Snap, our 8-year-old cow-bred gelding who is fully finished through the Breaking the Mold Horsemanship program.

Good horsemanship isn't just about riding through the drill. It's about developing the body control, balance, and connection that make the maneuver possible.

Build the foundation. The rest follows. 🤎

One of the hardest parts of coaching is learning that you can only take someone as far as they’re ready to go. 🦋 ✨

You can explain, demonstrate, guide, and encourage… but you can’t make someone feel something before they’re ready to recognize it. Horsemanship is a journey, and everyone is at a different place in their understanding 🐴✨

But every once in a while, you get to witness a moment that reminds you exactly why you do what you do.

On Sunday, I had one of those moments with a youth rider. I asked her to tell me the instant she felt her horse soften through the rib cage and begin to engage.

And she did. Immediately. Right when she should have 👏🏽

She felt it. She recognized it. And in that moment, something clicked. 🥹💕

Those are the moments that make coaching so rewarding. Not because someone got a maneuver right or completed an exercise, but because they began to feel what they were asking of their horse and UNDERSTAND the response.

Because horsemanship goes so much deeper than getting a horse to lope correct lines and circles. It’s learning to recognize the smallest changes, understand the conversation, and develop the feel to know when your horse is truly with you.

You can teach the mechanics, but developing feel? That’s something special. And getting to witness that lightbulb moment in someone else, especially a youth rider, is a pretty incredible part of this journey as a coach.✨🦋

That’s the kind of progress that matters. That’s horsemanship. 🤎✨🐴

🐴 The hot topic of helmets, horsemanship, and the bigger picture of overall safety...🤔

Safety is a major part of my program, especially when coaching my youth riders. I strongly advocate for helmets, and I wear one when I compete and have been known to throw one on when riding my colts out. Horses are powerful animals, and no matter how experienced we are, accidents can happen. 🤕

BUT... putting on a helmet doesn’t automatically make you safer than a rider who chooses not to wear one. A helmet is an important layer of protection, but it doesn’t replace horsemanship education. It’s your education and your horse’s education and confidence that help make you safer—and that all begins long before you're in the saddle.

With my riders, especially my youth riders, my coaching sessions are so much more than a "riding lesson". I want them to learn to understand and read horses, properly bridle/saddle and fit their tack, recognize and limit potential risks, and become responsible, confident horsemen & horsewomen✨🐴

At the end of the day, my goal is to help riders become more educated, thoughtful, capable, and SAFE both in and out of the saddle😎

I've been a little quiet on here, but I'm ready to start sharing more again. ❤️

Outside Rein Balance is all about helping riders build a better connection with their horses by becoming more aware of themselves, their bodies, and how they communicate✨🧘🏽‍♀️

I'll be sharing more of what I teach, things I notice when coaching riders, and ways we can continue growing both in and out of the saddle.
I'm glad to be here again. 🐴

Cones, poles, lines, circles 🤷🏽‍♀️...

These beat-up arena cones get plenty of comments! 🐴🤣 why!?🤷🏽‍♀️
Taking a few minutes and setting up BTM drills lets you fix your lines and perfect your circles in a low-stress setup. As a rider you work on muscle memory, your horse stays relaxed and builds confidence, plus you both get a good workout in half the time through proper engagement and alignment in BOTH you and your horses bodies🔥😎

Ditch the endless arena laps. Grab some cones, ride with purpose, and let the results speak for themselves! ✨
