Counter pressure is one of those things that looks simple from the outside, but can make a real difference during labor. Pressure on the lower back, hips, or sides can help support positioning, relieve some discomfort, and give the body something steady to work against during contractions.
A lot of people naturally lean into touch and support during labor. Sometimes that looks like a hand on the lower back. Sometimes it’s steady hip pressure. Sometimes it’s just having someone nearby paying attention to what helps and what doesn’t.
Support during labor is often less about doing something perfectly and more about responding to the moment.
