Counter pressure is one of those things that looks simple from the outside, but can make a real difference during labor. Pressure on the lower back, hips, or sides can help support positioning, relieve some discomfort, and give the body something steady to work against during contractions.

A lot of people naturally lean into touch and support during labor. Sometimes that looks like a hand on the lower back. Sometimes it’s steady hip pressure. Sometimes it’s just having someone nearby paying attention to what helps and what doesn’t.
Support during labor is often less about doing something perfectly and more about responding to the moment.

Pregnancy and birth are personal, and having providers who take time to answer questions, explain options, and build relationships can make a big difference in the experience of care.

At Clarksville Midwifery & Birth Center, we want families to feel seen, supported, and cared for as individuals throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Serotonin plays an important but often overlooked role in labor.
It helps regulate mood, manage stress, and supports the release of oxytocin. Movement, warmth, and consistent support all encourage serotonin production. Protecting this balance is part of supporting the body’s natural rhythm during labor and birth.

Water birth can be a beautiful, calming experience. The warm water helps soothe the body, making contractions feel more manageable and providing a sense of weightlessness. Being in the water can create a peaceful, gentle environment, which many find helps them feel more relaxed and in control.

Pushing works best when guided by your body’s natural urge.
There is no requirement to push on command or use just one position. You might push standing, kneeling, lying on your side, in the tub, or on the toilet. Listening to your body reduces strain and often leads to smoother progress. There is no rush. Just steady support and room to follow what works.

Your position during labor influences how your baby moves through the pelvis.
Each part of the pelvis opens in different ways depending on how you move. Standing, squatting, sitting on a birth ball, or using hands and knees all create different angles and space. Rotating positions helps relieve pressure and encourages descent. There is no universal answer, which is why flexibility and movement are encouraged.
