CLAXTON: Mary Frances Ennis, age 76, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 1, 2026. Although she resided in Claxton at her death, she was formerly a longtime resident of Bulloch County. Born on November 2, 1949, Frances’ greatest joy in life was her family. Frances loved traveling, especially trips to the beach. She enjoyed tending to her flowers and vegetable garden, never passed up a good bargain while shopping, and loved collecting owls. She was well known for her cooking abilities, especially her caramel cake, which she proudly brought to celebrations with family. She was a 1968 Honor Graduate of Claxton High School and enjoyed attending her recent 58th Year Class Reunion. Frances was a woman of strong faith. She attended Faith Baptist Church in Daisy, Georgia. She retired from the UGA Cooperative Extension Service and continued serving others through volunteer work with the Senior Companion Program for several years following retirement.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph "Dick" Stanfield and Effie Stanfield; infant sister, Bonnie Stanfield; husbands, Prentis Strickland and Rick Ennis; children, Leslie Strickland and Matthew Ennis; and grandson, Nicholas Kicklighter. Frances is survived by her daughters, Crystal Strickland of Gainesville, Georgia, and Wendy (Eddie) Futch of Pembroke, Georgia; her granddaughter, Rachel Ball of Gainesville, Georgia; and four grandsons.

She is also survived by her siblings: Midget (Elton) Driggers of Groveland, Georgia; Gail (Durrell) Purvis; Pearl (Bobby) Barnard; Johnny (Patricia) Stanfield of Augusta, Georgia; Scotty Stanfield; Cissy (David DeLoach) Palmer; Jimmy Stanfield; and Irene Stanfield, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members, all who will deeply miss her love, guidance, and warm presence. Frances held a special place in her heart for her great-nieces, Isabella Haire and Cree Deal, who loved helping her with special projects.

Visitation: Saturday, June 6, 2026, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home.

Interment will follow at Brewton Cemetery in Hagan, Georgia, officiated by Bro. Tom Shepard.

Pallbearers: Joe Driggers, Tony Odom, John Marshall Headrick, Heath Strickland, Donavon Stanfield, and Albert Rushing.

Frances will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her faith, and the countless meals, traditions, and memories she shared with those fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy of love will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends.

LILBURN/CLAXTON: Norma Tippins Strickland, 79, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2026. Norma was a devoted wife, loving mother, lifelong learner, and treasured friend whose kindness and creativity touched everyone who knew her. Born and raised in Claxton, Georgia, Norma graduated from Claxton High School and continued her education at Georgia Southern University, where she earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. She carried her love of learning throughout her life and inspired countless others through her dedication and warmth. Norma shared 57 years of marriage with her husband, Jimmy.

Together, they built a life centered on family and friendship. She was a proud and devoted mother to her sons, Jay and Matt, who were the center of her world. An avid lifelong bridge player, Norma cherished the friendships and fellowship the game brought her over the years. She was also deeply talented in arts and crafts, finding joy and fulfillment in making beautiful things. Whether through painting, calligraphy, or other creative pursuits, she shared her artistic gifts generously with family and friends. Norma will be remembered for her intelligence, creativity, gentle spirit, and unwavering love for those around her.

Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished and the many lives she touched. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

She is preceded in death by her parents B. G. and Joy Tippins, two sisters, Cathy Haire and Nan Peoples.

SURVIVORS: husband, Jimmy Strickland of Lilburn, Ga.; two sons, Jay Strickland of Blacksburg, VA. and Matt (Crystal) Strickland of Grayson, Ga.; sister, Glenda (John) Threet of Claxton, Ga.; brother, Bascom (Susan) Tippins of Dawsonville, Ga.; one granddaughter, Morgan Eisner; and many nieces and nephews.

CLAXTON: Bobby Strickland, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. Bobby was born to the late Charlie L. and Pharisee (Brazell) Strickland on September 15, 1944 and was raised later by stepfather, R.E. Baker. Bobby spent his life building a legacy of faithful devotion, hard work, and deep love for his family. He was a Godly man of quiet strength and high integrity, known for being a safe anchor for those he loved and always putting the needs of his family first. Bobby retired from Southern Bell phone company after over 30 years of service. A true outdoorsman at heart, Bobby found immense peace and joy out on the water fishing and immersing himself in nature. He loved sharing stories, a good laugh, and the simple pleasures of life with those around him. His greatest pride, however, was his family, and the wisdom and values he instilled will live on for generations.

He is survived by his son, Shannon and Megan Strickland; his sister Rita Lake; beloved grandchildren, Charlie, Emily, Betsy, and Mac Strickland; dear nephew Brian Strickland, who was like a son to him, and adored extended family members and lifelong friends.

Bobby was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Faye Strickland, his cherished son, Kevin Strickland, brother, Douglas Strickland, precious granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Strickland, and nephew, Seth Haire.

As we gather to honor the life of Bobby Strickland, we are reminded of the lasting impact of his presence, his guidance, and his love. Because of Bobby's unwavering faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we have hope in our eternal reunion with him. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy remains forever in our hearts.

CLAXTON: Jerry Cecil Akins, a devoted family man, proud veteran, and lifelong friend to all who knew him, passed away leaving behind a legacy of service, kindness, and unforgettable stories. After graduating, Jerry began his career with BellSouth before answering the call to serve his country when he was drafted into the United States Military. He proudly served with the Green Berets, the 101st Airborne Division “Screaming Eagles” for three years. His time in service shaped the strength, resilience, and compassion that would define the rest of his life. Following his military service, Jerry returned home and resumed his career with BellSouth while building the family he cherished so deeply. After many dedicated years of service, he retired in 2000. Never one to slow down, Jerry went on to start his own business, Astec Communications, where he continued working and connecting with people in the community he loved. Jerry was an avid outdoorsman who found peace and joy in nature. He loved canoeing, spending time outdoors, and sharing adventures with family and friends. He also dedicated many years of his life to mentoring young people as Troop Master of Boy Scouts Troop 400, serving faithfully for well over a decade. His guidance and encouragement left a lasting impact on countless young men and families. Jerry had a gift for seeing the best in people, even during difficult times. He never met a stranger and quickly turned everyone he encountered into a friend. Known for his warm heart and endless stories, he could captivate anyone willing to listen with tales that ranged from humorous to heartfelt. Above all else, Jerry loved his family deeply and treasured every moment spent with them. His legacy of friendship, service, storytelling, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Adell Akins; and son, Glen Akins; two brothers, H. L. Akins and William Akins; sister, Joan Broadus.

SURVIVORS: four sons, Tim Akins of Winter Springs, FL.; Dan Akins of Claxton; Andy Akins of Claxton and Zach (Amanda) Akins of Milledgeville, Ga.; two sisters, Wanda Blalock of Claxton and Pauline Shaney of Indian Trail, NC.; daughter in law, Zandra Akins of Glennville, Ga.; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

CLAXTON: Julia “Judy” Durrence Martin, 79, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia.

She was a proud graduate of Claxton High School and furthered her education at Georgia Southern University where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree.

For many years, Judy owned and operated J & J Greenhouses where she was recognized for her expertise in cultivating Christmas poinsettias.

Judy was a devoted member of Bay Branch Primitive Baptist Church, and her faith was a guiding force throughout her life and inspired many who knew her.

Judy's legacy is one of love, dedication, and a lifelong commitment to nurturing growth—both in nature and in the hearts of those around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Ray and Irene Dasher Durrence; her first husband, Wilton Aubrey "Monk" Crosby, Jr.; and brothers, Wayne and Ronnie Durrence.

She is survived by her husband, Stoy Martin; son, Stacy Crosby; step-daughter, Tara (Tom) Rothermel; nephews, Adam and Scott Durrence, and niece, Keisha (Marvin) Welch.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Jesse Scott and Karen Strickland for the compassionate care and support they provided to Judy and the family during her illness.

CLAXTON: Mary Catherine “Cathy” Tippins Haire, 71, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Evans Memorial Hospital, surrounded by family. Cathy dedicated over thirty years to Claxton Poultry, where her coworkers became dear friends. She was a devoted wife and mother. Cathy was a master tinkerer and could fix just about anything. She was an artist and loved to crochet.

She is preceded in death by her parents, B.G. and Joy Tippins; sister, Nan Peoples, and granddaughter Jordan Sapp.

CLAXTON: Sandra Green Powell, 77, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home between Claxton and Metter, GA on May 2, 2026. She grew up in Evans County and graduated from Claxton High School. She also attended the University of Georgia in Athens (UGA) and followed the UGA “Bulldogs” football, as well as the Georgia Southern “Eagles” in Statesboro, GA. Sandra joined the Evergreen Baptist Church at Age 10, and she loved the Lord and was very active in the church’s mission work, including the WMU, “Sugar Time,” the Regional Medical Van, supporting families in Ducktown, TN, and visiting local nursing homes. She worked at Family and Children’s Services in Claxton, the Game & Fish Division in Metter, and the Bulloch County Health Department in Statesboro, where she retired from the State government after 30 years of dedicated service. She was over the Tattnall & Evans County missions, a leader of the WMU, and a Sunday school teacher for the adult class. She enjoyed cooking and had several articles with her recipes published in the local newspapers over the years. She loved her friends and family and, in the opinion of her husband of 58 years and her children, she was the best wife and mother who ever lived.

She is preceded in death by her father, Carl Green, her mother, Gaynell Andrews Green, and her grandmother, Shellie Andrews Kicklighter of Collins, GA.

SURVIVORS: husband, Harold C. Powell, Jr. (“Hal”); sons, James (“Terry”) Powell and Scott Matthew Powell, along with their spouses, Rebecca Pierce-Powell and Amanda Powell; brother, James (“Richard”) Green; grandchildren, Megan Powell, Amanda (“Mandy”) Powell Lesly, Anna Powell, Matthew Powell, Lydia Grace Powell, and step-grandchildren, Zachary Pierce and Elizabeth Pierce.

CLAXTON: William “Billy” Allen Brewster, 61, passed away on May 1, 2026. Born on February 26, 1965, Billy lived a life marked by his love of sharing great stories and his passion for fishing and music. He had a genuine affection for his grandchildren and animals, which reflected his kind and nurturing nature.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Brewster and Christine Highlander, as well as his stepfather, Roy Highlander; aunt, Louise Dillon; and his maternal grandparents.

William is lovingly remembered by his wife, Barbara Brewster; his son, Logan (Stevanie) Brewster, and their children, Corey, Levi, and Evanie; uncle, Hayward Sharp; foster sister, Mary Jo Webster; and many cousins.

Billy’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him through the stories he told, the quiet moments spent fishing, and the music that filled his days. His legacy of love and connection remains with his family and community.

CLAXTON: Earl Patrick Ward, affectionately known as Pat, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2026, at Spanish Oaks Hospice in Savannah, Georgia. Born on September 24, 1933, in Savannah, he lived a life marked by dedication, generosity, and a deep connection to his family.

Pat was a proud veteran who served his country during the Korean War. He spent three years in the Air Force, stationed in Japan. Following his military service, he devoted a significant part of his life to the Georgia Ports Authority, where he worked until retirement. Those who knew Pat well understood how much he enjoyed his career and the sense of purpose it gave him.

His generous spirit was evident in all facets of his life. Pat’s kindness and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on his family, friends, and colleagues. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was an avid golfer, finding joy and fellowship on the greens, a pastime that brought him great happiness.

Pat's life was one of meaningful service, joyful pursuits, and unwavering generosity. His memory will be treasured by all who knew him, and his legacy will continue through the family he so deeply loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marie M. Ward; his loving wife, Loretta A. Ward; and brothers, Robert "Sonny" (Arlene) Ward, Roy (Lucy) Ward, and James Ward.

SURVIVORS: Pat is survived by his beloved son, Kelly Patrick Ward; his daughter, Karen (David) Marshall; and his cherished grandson, Ethan Marshall. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Catherine Ward.
