Sometimes they can do the thing.
They just still need you nearby while they do it.

The phone call gets made—but you sit in the room.
They go into the store—but text you from aisle three.
They handle the conversation—but come back afterward to sort through what happened.

It can leave us wondering if we're helping too much.

But independence and support are not always opposites.
Sometimes the question isn't, ā€œHow do I get them to stop needing me?ā€
Maybe it's:
ā€œWhat support helps them do more for themselves?ā€

I wrote more about the space between doing it for them, with them, and simply being nearby.

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t the crisis.

It’s the constant calculating.

Is today a good day to bring this up?

Should I remind them again?

Will changing the plan make things worse?

Do I push a little… or let this one go?

There are so many decisions caregivers make quietly all day long that no one else ever sees.

If you know, you know. šŸ’™

Sometimes a small change in how we ask a question can change the entire conversation.

When someone struggles to get started on a task, it isn't always about motivation.

Executive functioning challenges can make planning, initiating, and organizing feel overwhelming.

Instead of asking, "Did you do your homework?" try asking, "What's making it hard to get started?"

That simple shift invites problem-solving instead of creating pressure.

At FAAN, we're passionate about sharing practical strategies that families can use in everyday life.

Some weeks, success looks different than you expected.

Maybe everyone made it through the week.

Maybe a difficult conversation ended peacefully.

Maybe someone tried something new.

Maybe you simply kept showing up.

Those things count, too.

Wishing your family a peaceful weekend.
