A recent peer-reviewed study evaluating PRP preparations produced with the XCELL 60 mL single-spin system reported an average of 10.8 billion total available platelets (TAPs) in the final PRP product.

But what does that number represent?

TAPs is calculated using the platelet concentration and final product volume, providing a measure of the total platelet dose available within the preparation after PRP processing.

In the study, 70 consecutive clinical samples from two independent sites produced an average TAP value of 10.8 billion platelets in a final volume of approximately 6 mL. The system also achieved an average platelet capture rate of 83% and an approximately eightfold increase in platelet concentration compared with baseline whole blood.

Platelet dose is only one characteristic of a PRP formulation. Researchers also evaluated platelet capture rate, red blood cell reduction, leukocyte composition, and final product volume to more completely characterize the resulting preparations.

The findings demonstrated consistent platelet recovery and the ability to produce PRP formulations with different leukocyte profiles using a single-spin processing approach.

Insights from Dr. Jason Piraino and Dr. Ariana DeMers on the evolving discussion around PRP, protein concentrate (PC), and the role of biologics in musculoskeletal care.

This session explores current research perspectives on inflammation, tissue response, and biologic variability, along with how these concepts are being considered in relation to tissue type, healing phases, and clinical decision-making frameworks.

Topics include how PRP and PC are being evaluated within the broader context of musculoskeletal care and how clinicians are thinking about biologic selection based on patient and pathology-specific factors.

Peer-reviewed evidence matters.

As regenerative medicine continues to evolve, transparent reporting and standardized biologic characterization have become increasingly important.

We're excited to share that research evaluating the XCELL PRP System has now been published in Bioengineering.

Independent clinicians evaluated 70 consecutive clinical samples across two outpatient sites using the XCELL 60 mL single-spin system.

The study demonstrated:

โ€ข 83% platelet capture rate
โ€ข Average 8x platelet concentration over baseline, with individual samples reaching up to 10x
โ€ข Ability to produce PRP formulations with varying leukocyte profiles without sacrificing platelet yield
โ€ข Single-spin architecture offering reduced processing time, simplified workflow, minimized cellular mechanical trauma, and reduced contamination risk through fewer transfer steps

The publication also reinforces an important discussion occurring across regenerative medicine:

Understanding platelet dose, cellular composition, and processing methodology may help clinicians better characterize the biologic therapies they deliver.

We are proud to contribute peer-reviewed data to the growing body of regenerative medicine literature.
