I don’t think I say this often enough, but thank you.

Thank you to every family who has trusted me to be part of their journey. Whether I cared for you years ago, welcomed your baby recently, or have had the privilege of caring for you through more than one pregnancy, please know how much that trust means to me.

There are so many choices when it comes to maternity care, and I never forget what it means when a family chooses me.

You trust me with your pregnancy.
You trust me with your baby.
You welcome me into your home and into some of the most intimate moments of your lives.

And then, years later, so many of you come back with another baby. You send me pictures and updates. You leave reviews. You share my posts. You tell your friends, sisters, coworkers, and other expecting families about Circle of Life.

Every referral means more to me than simply growing my practice. When you send someone you love to me, you are trusting me to care for someone who matters to you.

I notice that. I appreciate it. And I never want to take it for granted.

After all these years, hearing someone say, “I want you to be my midwife,” still means something to me.

Are you planning a hospital delivery?

You can choose what you want your prenatal care to look and feel like.

Before the blood pressure, belly measurements, and listening to your baby’s heartbeat, we sit.

You and your family have a comfortable place to settle in while we talk about your pregnancy, your questions, what you are experiencing, and what you are hoping for as you prepare to meet your baby.

This is where we get to know one another. Where your hopes, dreams, and aspirations for your pregnancy and birth come to light. Where there is time to talk through your options, ask questions, learn, and prepare for the birth experience you are hoping for.

Then we move into the clinical portion of your appointment, focusing on the health and well-being of you and your baby.

Because excellent prenatal care is not only about what we measure, monitor, and document. It is also about having the time and space to feel heard, informed, supported, and prepared.

At Circle of Life Childbirth Practice, we love a good birth plan.

We love hearing how you envision your birth, what matters most to you, and all those little details you have dreamed about.

Of course, there are the things we would all love to sneak onto a birth plan if we could…

Wake up fully dilated.
Three contractions, one push, baby.
Water breaks five minutes before baby arrives.
Just enough labor to get the birth tub ready.
One push and hear, “Reach down and grab your baby.”

We cannot promise all of that, but we can certainly appreciate the vision.

And a very special congratulations to this evening’s first-time parents, who welcomed their beautiful baby girl and managed to get everything they hoped for in their birth plan.

Sometimes the wish list really does come true. ❤️

This one might ruffle a few feathers, but it is a conversation worth having.

A Licensed Midwife, a Doula, and a Birth Worker can all have valuable roles in the birth space, but their education, clinical training, credentials, scope of practice, and responsibilities can be very different.

And that matters when families are deciding who they want caring for them during pregnancy, labor, birth, and especially if an emergency occurs.

This is not about telling women who they should or should not choose. I fully support a woman’s right to choose the person she wants beside her, including someone without formal clinical training, as long as that is an informed decision.

The key word is informed.

Ask about their education.
Ask about their credentials.
Ask how many births they have attended.
Ask what clinical training they completed and who supervised that training.
Ask what they are trained to recognize and manage.
Ask what happens when something is no longer normal.
Ask about their emergency and hospital transfer plan.

There is room for Licensed Midwives, Doulas, and Birth Workers in the birth community.

But families deserve to understand the differences before making their choice.

Because informed consent only works when you are actually informed.

One important note about licensure: Midwifery laws vary from state to state. In Florida, practicing midwifery without an active license is a third degree felony. This is another reason families should understand the credentials and legal scope of the person they choose to attend their birth.

August.

A month that somehow feels both slow and fleeting.

One day you’re staring at a positive pregnancy test, and the next you’re packing a birth pool, washing tiny baby clothes, and wondering where the time went.

“August slipped away into a moment in time…”

Pregnancy has a way of doing that.

These months aren’t just about waiting for a baby. They’re about preparing your mind, your body, and your family. Learning your options. Asking questions. Finding a provider who listens. Building a birth team that makes you feel safe and supported.

Whether your journey leads to a home birth, a water birth, or a hospital birth, you deserve evidence based education, informed consent, and people who respect that this is your birth, your baby, and your decision.

Don’t let August slip away without investing in the one thing that will stay with you long after summer ends.

The way you were cared for.

What I Would Tell You About Childbirth If I Wasn’t Afraid to Hurt Your Feelings…

Every birth is different.

Your mother’s story is not your story.
Your sister’s story is not your story.
Your friend’s story is not your story.

Choose a provider who listens.
You should never have to fight to be heard.

Prepare for birth, but don’t become attached to one perfect plan.
Babies have a way of writing their own story.

Trust your instincts.
No one knows your body better than you.

Strength isn’t pretending you’re fearless.
Strength is continuing, even when birth asks everything of you.

The right birth team can change everything.
Borrow their confidence until you find your own.

And finally…

Trust yourself.

Your provider brings education and experience.
You bring a lifetime of living in your own body.

The best births happen when those two things work together.

As a midwife, I spend a lot of time talking about the very real risks of unnecessary interventions, the importance of informed consent, and why every woman deserves to understand all of her birth options.

That doesn’t mean hospitals are “bad.” They save lives every single day, and when they’re needed, I’m grateful they exist.

But for healthy, low risk pregnancies, birth doesn’t have to begin with the assumption that it’s a medical emergency.

Every woman deserves evidence based information about the benefits and risks of every birth setting, whether that’s home, a birth center, or a hospital. My goal has never been to convince women where to give birth. It’s to make sure they know they actually have a choice.

If you’ve ever seen me passionately explaining the cascade of interventions for the hundredth time… this meme is probably about me. 😅

“Can I have a homebirth if I live in an apartment?”

Absolutely.

“But… it’s an apartment.”

It’s still your home.

You don’t have to own a house. You don’t need a giant soaking tub, a farmhouse, or Pinterest-worthy birthing space. You need a safe, low risk pregnancy, a qualified birth team, and a place where you feel comfortable.

I’ve attended beautiful births in apartments, condos, townhomes, mobile homes, and traditional houses. Babies don’t care about square footage. They care about being born into loving hands.

If you’re worried about neighbors, parking, stairs, elevators, or limited space, we’ve probably navigated it before. Homebirth is far more adaptable than most people realize.

Don’t let your address convince you that homebirth isn’t an option.

Your apartment is your home.

And yes, homebirth can happen there. ❤️
