I logged every time my wife snapped at me for 30 days. There were 23. 19 of them happened between 3:30 and 5pm.

I kept the log because I was sure the common factor was me. On day 31 I quit watching her and started watching a glass of water.

She pours it every morning around 8 and sets it on her desk. That morning I put a strip of painter's tape at the waterline. At 4:10 the water was still touching the tape. She was sitting 10 inches from it with a headache, telling me the sound of my chewing felt like a personal attack.

I was eating yogurt.

I know how a grown man taping a glass sounds. I did it for 9 more days, and the water moved twice.

Once I saw the glass, I saw the rest of it. Her whole intake before 4pm was one coffee at 7. I asked what she had for lunch and she looked at me like I had asked for the capital of a country she had never heard of. She would sit in a 64 degree house in a T-shirt with goosebumps down both arms, and when I handed her a hoodie she would say, "Oh. I am freezing," like I had just delivered the news.

For comparison, I counted myself. I picked up a drink 11 times in one day and none of them was a decision. My wife is the smartest person I know and she got to 0.

There is a sense called interoception. It is the one that reports from inside the body: hungry, thirsty, cold, tired. Mine works like a fuel gauge. I get 2 hours of warning. In a lot of neurodivergent women it works like a warning light that comes on after the engine has already cut out. The whole stretch between fine and empty gets delivered to her at once, around 4pm, and it never arrives labeled as thirst. It arrives as every sound being too loud and me standing too close.

She was 6 the first time an adult told her that her body was wrong. She said she was hungry an hour after lunch and her mother said, "You cannot be hungry. You just ate." At 7 she asked for the bathroom and a teacher told her she had gone at recess and could wait. The signal was already faint, and the people she trusted most trained her to overrule the little that got through.

So when the crash came every afternoon with no hunger attached to it, there was one explanation left. She was just like this. Moody was the word at home. Dramatic was the word at school. By the time I met her, she was saying it before anybody else could.

"I am sorry. I do not know why I am like this. I am just a bitch sometimes."

Here is the part I am ashamed of. For 6 years, every time she said that, I answered, "It is okay. I know how you get." I thought that was patience. Every time I forgave her for 4pm, I confirmed there was something to forgive. I was the kindest witness the prosecution ever had.

Then I figured out the glass and made it worse. I asked, "Have you had any water today?" and watched her face fall. I had taken a woman who has failed that question her entire life and made her grade herself again, out loud, in front of me.

So I stopped talking.

At 8am a glass goes into her hand on my way past, the way you hand somebody their keys. At 11 a plate lands next to her laptop. I say nothing and I keep walking. If I make it sweet, it becomes a favor, and she pays favors back. If I make it a reminder, it becomes one more thing she forgot. It has to show up like the mail.

I did that every day for 5 months.

In March she was on the phone with her sister at 4:20 in the afternoon, laughing so hard she had to set the phone down. I was at the sink rinsing her glass. That night she said, "I think I am finally getting better. I have not been awful in weeks."

I almost let her keep that. Then I heard what was inside it. Getting better meant she still believed the old version of her was real.

So I showed her the log, and the tape.

She read it twice. Then she asked me one question, very quietly.

"So I was never mean?"

She sat down on the kitchen floor and cried for most of an hour, for a 9 year old who got sent to her room when what she needed was a sandwich.

I think about the version of us where I never taped that glass. She is 50. Everybody who loves her has learned to stay out of the kitchen around 4. She is still apologizing for her character every afternoon and I am still forgiving her for it. Both of us believe that is what a good marriage looks like.

People ask me what leading a woman looks like. Most days it looks like a glass of water and my mouth shut.

If you love a woman like this, quit asking her what is wrong at 4pm. Put a glass in her hand at 2 and keep walking.

And if you are reading this next to a full glass you poured this morning, drink it. Then hear this from the man who kept the log. The worst hour of your day has been your body asking for help in the only voice it has left. You have been a good person this entire time. 4pm included.

It took me 6 months to notice a glass of water. Every month of that, she apologized for something that was never her fault, and I let her. I wrote The Neurodivergent's Guide to Leadership so the man reading this gets there faster than I did. He wants to get this right more than you think.
