These are common questions I get:

“Dr. Ellis, what peptides are you taking?”
“What hormones should I be on?”
“What supplements do you recommend?”
“How do you get enough protein?”

My answer is always the same…

I can’t tell you what YOU should be taking without knowing your health history, symptoms, lab work, current medications, and goals.

The right protocol for a 28-year-old athlete is different than the right protocol for a 45-year-old woman navigating hormone changes. And both are different than someone focused on weight loss, longevity, muscle gain, fertility, or metabolic health.

That’s why at my clinic, I customize every wellness plan to the individual.

That being said, many of you have asked what I personally do, so I’m sharing my current routine.

I am a 45-year-old woman with no major health conditions, but like many women in their 40s, my hormones are not optimal.

My current wellness and longevity protocol includes:

But if I had to pick ONE thing that has become non-negotiable for healthy aging, it would be this:

PROTEIN.

I work hard to hit 100-120 grams of protein every day.

Why?

Because after 40, maintaining muscle becomes one of the most important predictors of long-term health, strength, metabolism, mobility, bone health, independence, and overall quality of life.

No peptide, hormone, supplement, or injection can replace the basics:

GLP-1s can be amazing when used properly. But Let’s Talk About Something Nobody Warned You About.

One thing I’ve noticed is that some people don’t just lose their appetite on GLP-1 medications.

They lose a little bit of their wanting.

Not just wanting food.

Wanting date nights.
Wanting hobbies.
Wanting to go out with friends.
Wanting intimacy.
Wanting to chase goals.

The constant food noise is gone—which is wonderful—but sometimes it feels like the brain’s reward system got turned down a little too much.

I’ve been digging into the research on saffron lately, and it’s fascinating.

Saffron appears to influence several neurotransmitters involved in mood, motivation, and pleasure. It’s not a stimulant and it’s not forcing dopamine production. Think of it more like gently supporting the pathways that help us feel engaged, interested, and connected.

A few studies have shown benefits for mood and even aspects of sexual function, particularly arousal.

Is it a magic fix? No.
But if you’ve been on a GLP-1 and have thought:

“I don’t crave food anymore, but I don’t really crave much of anything else either…”

Saffron may be worth discussing.

As always, don’t overlook the basics and make sure someone is helping you with overall wellness.

The 35 grams of protein at breakfast conversation is one every woman over 40 needs to hear. 👂

Most women have heard the need for getting enough protein throughout the day.

But what if when you eat your protein matters almost as much as how much you eat?

For women over 40, breakfast may be the highest-leverage protein opportunity of the entire day.

WHY BREAKFAST PROTEIN IS DIFFERENT:

☀️ THE MORNING CORTISOL WINDOW

Cortisol naturally peaks within the first 30-45 minutes after waking.

While cortisol is often blamed for everything from weight gain to stress, this morning rise is actually normal and necessary. In this state, your body is primed to mobilize energy and support muscle maintenance.

When adequate protein is consumed during this window, your body is more likely to use those amino acids for muscle repair and preservation rather than simply burning them for fuel.

For women approaching menopause and beyond, protecting lean muscle mass becomes one of the most important anti-aging strategies available.



📈 BLOOD SUGAR STABILIZATION

A protein-rich breakfast slows gastric emptying and helps create a more stable blood sugar environment for the next several hours.

Research using continuous glucose monitors has shown that even people with “normal” blood sugar can experience multiple glucose spikes throughout the day.

Those repeated spikes contribute to inflammation, insulin resistance, energy crashes, and the formation of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs)—compounds that accelerate collagen breakdown and visible aging.

🌮 Breakfast taco bowl: 4 oz ground beef, 2 eggs, avocado, salsa = 38g

🍗 4 oz shredded chicken + 2 eggs = 40g

🥚 Egg muffin cups (4) with turkey and veggies + Greek yogurt = 35g+

🧀 2 eggs, ½ cup cottage cheese, and 2 turkey sausage links = 36g

🥤 Protein smoothie: 2 scoops clean protein powder, collagen peptides, unsweetened almond milk, cinnamon, and berries = 35-45g

🍓 Greek yogurt bowl: 1½ cups full-fat Greek yogurt, h**p seeds, chia seeds, and walnuts = 35g+

🍞 2 slices fresh-milled sourdough topped with cottage cheese and smoked salmon = 35-40g

🧇 Protein waffles made with eggs, cottage cheese, and protein powder = 35g+

🥑 Avocado breakfast bowl with 4 oz ground turkey and 2 eggs = 38g

🐔 Chicken breakfast hash with sweet potatoes and eggs = 35-40g
