Family Life Counseling Center

Family Life Counseling Center Family Life Counseling Center provides mental health services, family therapy, marriage counseling.

We guide you in discovering what brings you happiness and will make your life successful. Our owner, Sandi, was previously a social worker who worked with Dept of Children & Families and Dept of Juvenile Justice and decided she wanted to assist with more intensive intervention. She has also worked with Early Steps (early intervention for autism & children with developmental disabilities, 0-3 yrs o

ld) and as a certified high school teacher for ESE & youth with Emotional-Behavioral Disabilities. After realizing the huge need for mental health services, marriages & divorce recovery support in Lake County, FL, Sandi decided to open a private practice to fill that void. FLCC is now in 5 cities across Central FL: Clermont, Tavares, Lakeland, Auburndale, and most recently Orlando. She has since brought on over 45 therapists who specialize in a wealth of knowledge: trauma, addictions, marriage issues, children's behavioral & mental health, sports psychology, to name a few. FLCC is one of the few in Central FL that has therapists specialized in Brainspotting & Safe & Sound Protocol. FLCC is also a contracted vendor to provide school-based therapy, as well as a vendor for the local foster care systems.

Tips for Dealing with Anxiety
Anxiety is a common human experience. Everyone feels it from time to time, whether before a big presentation, during a stressful life change, or when facing uncertainty. But when anxiety becomes frequent or overwhelming, it can interfere with daily life. The good news is that there are practical ways to manage it and feel more in control.
1. Focus on Your Breathing
When anxiety rises, breathing often becomes shallow and fast. Slowing your breath can help calm your body and mind. Try inhaling slowly through your nose for four counts, holding for four counts, and exhaling for six counts. Repeating this a few times can reduce physical tension and help you feel grounded.
2. Break Problems Into Smaller Steps
Anxiety often grows when a situation feels too big to handle. Instead of focusing on everything at once, break tasks into smaller, manageable steps. Completing one small action at a time can make challenges feel less overwhelming and more achievable.
3. Stay Active
Physical activity is one of the most effective ways to reduce anxiety. Exercise helps release tension and boosts mood. This does not mean you need an intense workout. A short walk, stretching, dancing, or light movement can make a meaningful difference.
4. Limit Caffeine and Sugar
Too much caffeine can increase feelings of nervousness and restlessness. Sugar spikes and crashes can also affect your mood. If you notice that anxiety gets worse after coffee, energy drinks, or sugary snacks, consider reducing them and seeing how you feel.
5. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment without judgment. It can help stop anxious thoughts from spiraling. You can practice mindfulness by noticing your surroundings, focusing on your senses, or simply observing your thoughts without trying to fight them.
6. Get Enough Sleep
Lack of sleep can make anxiety worse. Try to keep a regular sleep schedule, avoid screens before bed, and create a relaxing nighttime routine. Good rest helps your brain and body handle stress more effectively.
7. Talk to Someone You Trust
Anxiety can feel lighter when you share it with someone supportive. Talking to a friend, family member, or counselor can help you feel understood and less alone. Sometimes just putting feelings into words can reduce their power.
8. Challenge Negative Thoughts
Anxious thoughts often predict the worst possible outcome. When this happens, ask yourself whether the thought is based on facts or fear. Try replacing extreme thoughts with more balanced ones. For example, instead of thinking, “Everything will go wrong,” try, “This is hard, but I can handle it step by step.”
9. Avoid Bottling Things Up
Keeping feelings inside can make anxiety build over time. Writing in a journal, talking aloud, or using creative outlets like art or music can help release emotional pressure in a healthy way.
10. Know When to Seek Help
If anxiety is making it hard to work, sleep, study, or enjoy life, professional help can make a big difference. Therapists and doctors can offer treatment options such as counseling, coping strategies, or medication when appropriate. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Final Thoughts
Anxiety can be challenging, but it does not have to control your life. Small changes in daily habits, mindset, and support can go a long way. Start with one or two tips, be patient with yourself, and remember that progress often happens gradually. With the right tools, it is possible to feel calmer, stronger, and more in control.

A few months ago, back in April we had been nominated by the Orlando Sentinel for their Best of Central FL and we asked all of you to vote… and you did!

Today, the magazine came out… and we won the Gold award - 1st out of about 80 nominees. It is with humility & appreciation to share this with you all. Thank you once again for entrusting your family to us!

I’m attached the online magazine, and we are on pg 33, but I enjoyed looking at everyone else as well.
