In 1920, a young man by the name of H. Chapman moved to Cleveland, Oklahoma. Accepting employment with the King Furniture and Undertaking Company (located where the Cleveland Tag Agency and Munding Insurance Agency are today), Mr. Chapman dedicated himself to providing compassionate and considerate funeral service. Shortly after his arrival in Cleveland he married Thelma Deuel, whose mother Zulu,

operated the Merchants Hotel. They purchased the undertaking establishment from J. King in 1927, thus creating the Chapman Funeral Home. For the next three years, they operated the funeral home in a home near the First Baptist Church at 110 South Dunlap. In 1930, the Chapman Funeral Home was moved to the Dr. E. Robinson building at 110 North Broadway. Located in this building for nearly twelve years, they purchased and moved to the Meyer and Wise buildings (100 South Broadway) in 1942. Hugh and Thelma raised all four of their children: Betty, Billie, Frank and H. M., II in Cleveland. Upon graduation from the Chicago School of Embalming and his return from World War II, they hired Merle L. Black, Blackie as funeral director and embalmer. Merle had married their youngest daughter, Billie Lou Chapman in 1942. On May 28, 1949, the Chapman Funeral Home was relocated to its current location at 108 West Delaware with an open house to dedicate their new facility. During the next thirteen years, Hugh and Thelma with the assistance of Blackie and Billie, operated the funeral home and Clevelands ambulance service. Accustomed to working side by side with his wife, Mr. Chapman retired in 1962 after the death of Thelma, selling the funeral home to Merle and Billie Black. The Blacks continued to operate the family owned business for over thirty three years. The name was changed to Chapman-Black Funeral Home in 1965 at which time the city took over the ambulance service. In 1980 their youngest son, Gene, a ten year Navy veteran began the third generation of the family in funeral service. In 1996, a full service floral shop, Chapman-Black Floral Designs was added to extend our services to more fully meet the needs of our families.

Donald Herbert Garrett

Donald Herbert Garrett passed from this life on June 1, 2026, at the age of 74 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma.

Donnie was born on January 4, 1952, in Hominy, Oklahoma, to Gene and Juanita (Fox) Garrett. He was raised in Cleveland, Oklahoma, where he attended school and graduated with the Cleveland High School Class of 1970. During his school years, Donnie was actively involved in athletics, playing football and competing in discus events, demonstrating the determination and competitive spirit that would characterize his life.

On February 26, 1972, Donnie married the love of his life, Janell Faith Warden, at Maramec Baptist Church. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and hard work.

Donnie began his career with Osage Oil, working as a mechanic in the company shop. Through his dedication, skill, and leadership, he advanced to the position of Shop Foreman and was among the final employees to remain with the company before its closure in the mid-1980s. He later continued his work in the oil industry with Ball Oil Company before pursuing his entrepreneurial dream. After purchasing his own truck, Donnie founded Donald Garrett, Inc., a transportation company that reflected his strong work ethic, independence, and commitment to providing for his family.

Donnie found joy in the simple pleasures of life and the people he loved most. He was an avid fan of football and NASCAR, and he took great pride in keeping his lawn looking immaculate. Music was a constant source of comfort, especially the timeless songs of the Gaither Vocal Band, which he enjoyed listening to throughout the years.

A devoted member and Deacon of Canyon Road Baptist Church, Donnie generously gave of his time and talents, spending countless hours helping with projects and tasks around the church. His faith, dedication, and servant's heart left a lasting impression on his church family.

Donnie also had a special love for animals, and the many pets he welcomed into his home brought joy and companionship to him and his family. At the end of the day, he could often be found relaxing at home, watching classic westerns or enjoying his favorite programs on TV Land, especially anything featuring John Wayne.

Some of Janell's most treasured memories were the long drives she shared with Donnie while he worked, simply enjoying the opportunity to spend extra time together. Their bond was built on love, companionship, and a deep appreciation for life's everyday moments.

Above all, Donnie was a devoted provider and a fierce protector of those he loved. He will be remembered as a strong man with an unwavering work ethic, a perfectionist who took pride in everything he did, and someone whose dedication to his family never wavered. His strength, generosity, and steadfast love will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Survivors are his wife Janell of the home; two children Jeanette Atkins, Jimmy Garrett (Terri), identical twin brother Ronnie Garrett (Glenda), one sister Vickie Tinsley (Claude); three grandchildren Hailey (Marvin), Ashton, and Julius (Baylea); two great grandchildren Elliott, and Elijah and a host of other relatives and friends. Donnie was preceded in death by his parents Gene and Juanita Garrett.

Services will be held on 1:00 pm, Thursday June 4, 2026, at the Canyon Road Baptist Church with Pator Mike Peter officiating. Burial will be held in the Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Oklahoma. Chapman-Black Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements. Friends and family may visit an online guest book and memorial page for Donnie at www.chapman-black.com.

Although not all veterans grieve in the same way, sometimes the unique conflict situation veterans face and their inability to take time off to grieve the loss of a fellow service member, frequently brings on specific instances of survivor guilt and traumatic grief. Survivor guilt can be very intense for veterans, in fact it is most common among veterans diagnosed with Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Traumatic grief occurs when a loss is sudden, violent, and/or completely unexpected. This kind of grieving can also extend into physical pain, mental anxiety, and stress disorders. There are numerous resources available from family, friends, and organizations who stand ready to offer assistance. To learn more about veteran offerings, contact us at your convenience.
