The scan itself is actually the simplest part of breast thermography. What you do in the 24 hours before, and the weeks after, is where the real value lives.

Most first-timers don't know either piece, so here's the short version.

BEFORE your appointment:
1. Skip deodorant, lotions, and powders on the day of your scan
2. Avoid heavy exercise, sauna, or sunbathing for 24 hours
3. No coffee, tea, or smoking within 2 hours (these shift your circulation)
4. Wear something loose and comfortable so your body acclimates easily

AFTER you get your results is where I see clients have their biggest "aha" moment. Your report isn't a verdict. It's a map of physiological patterns, mostly inflammation, that can absolutely change with the right support.

This is where "breast clearing" comes in. Gentle lymphatic brushing, hydration, castor oil packs, supporting hormone balance, and looking at foods or environmental inputs that may be driving inflammation. Small daily habits, the same way we think about brushing our teeth, move the needle far more than any single appointment.

Then we re-scan in 3 months and watch the patterns shift. That's the whole point. A thermography image is a starting line, not a finish line.

If you have a scan coming up, or you're curious what your baseline looks like, send me a message. I'll walk you through the prep and what to expect. πŸ’š

Most horse owners have never watched a thermal scan up close. The camera never touches your horse, the room stays quiet, and the whole thing looks almost uneventful. The real work happens in the prep and the reading.

Here is what to expect, before during and after 🐴

Before: Your horse needs to be clean, dry, and out of direct sunlight for 30 to 45 minutes. Blankets, boots, and liniments come off well in advance. Anything that traps or transfers heat will distort the image.

During: The infrared camera reads surface heat patterns from a distance. No contact, no radiation. We move around your horse capturing the back, limbs, hooves, neck, and hindquarters, looking for asymmetry and hot or cold spots.

After: You receive a report that maps heat across the body. Asymmetry side to side, concentrated warmth in a joint, or a cold area suggesting reduced circulation. These patterns guide the next conversation with your vet or bodyworker.

Knowing what to expect makes the scan more accurate and the results more useful for everyone caring for your horse.

Curious what a scan would show on your horse? Send us a message and we will find a time that works. πŸ’›

Your saddle passed the eye test. Your horse's back did not.

Here's the quiet truth about saddle fit: a saddle can sit beautifully at standstill, clear every hands-on check from an experienced fitter, and still be redistributing pressure in ways the eye simply cannot catch. Static fit and dynamic load are two different conversations.

Thermal imaging joins that second conversation. After your horse moves, asymmetric loading shows up as heat. One panel working harder than the other. A pressure point lighting up just behind the wither. A cool spot where circulation is being pinched off.

Call it thermal honesty. The camera isn't second-guessing your fitter, it's adding the layer no human eye is built to see, the post-work picture of how that saddle actually loaded your horse over twenty minutes of trot and canter.

This matters because compensation patterns start here. A subtle imbalance under the saddle today becomes a tight shoulder next month and an "attitude problem" by fall.

If your saddle fitter has done their job and something still feels off, a thermal scan can fill in the missing chapter. Send us a message and we'll find a time that works.

A thermogram is not a picture of your body. It is a picture of your body's heat.

And heat tells a very different story than structure does. 🌿

Most imaging tools, like X-rays, ultrasounds, and MRIs, map your anatomy. They show where things are: bones, tissues, masses, density. A thermogram does something else entirely. It uses infrared imaging to map thermal activity, the patterns of warmth and cooling happening across your skin in real time.

So when you sit down to review your results with me, you are not looking at where disease has landed. You are looking at where your body is working harder. Where circulation is shifting. Where inflammation may be active long before it has a name or a symptom.

That is why I like to translate "thermogram" out of clinical jargon and into plain language: it is a heat map of how your body is functioning today. A snapshot of activity, not architecture.

When you understand what you are actually seeing, the results become a tool you can use. Questions you can ask. Patterns you can monitor over time. That is what proactive, radiation-free health awareness is really about. πŸ’›

Two barns, same discipline, two very different seasons.

One scans their horses at the start of the season and again after hard competition weeks. The other calls the vet when something looks wrong. Both barns care deeply about their horses. They're just answering different questions.

By the time lameness is visible to the eye, the compensation pattern underneath has usually been building for weeks. A horse shifts weight off a sore hock. The opposite shoulder picks up the slack. Heat patterns start to tell a story long before the trot-up does.

Here's the distinction worth knowing:

🩺 Reactive vet care starts with a symptom. It's the right call when you have a specific injury, lameness, or concern that needs diagnosis and a treatment plan. Nothing replaces your veterinarian when something is already wrong.

🌱 Proactive thermal screening starts with a baseline. Infrared imaging picks up asymmetries and stress patterns before they show up as a head bob or a shortened stride, while you still have room to adjust workload, tack, bodywork, or footing.

The two work best together. Thermography between vet visits gives your team more data points to make decisions with. Your vet diagnoses and treats. Thermal imaging helps you watch for the patterns that lead to needing one.

If you want a baseline on your horse before the next big competition stretch, send me a message and we'll find a time that works.

Two people wake up feeling a little "off." One books the check-up that week. The other waits to see if it passes.

Be honest. Which one are you? πŸ‘‡

There's no wrong answer here. Some of us are wired to investigate early. Others trust the body to work it out. Both come from a real place.

But the way we handle small signals at work usually shows up in how we handle them in our health, too. The deadline we tackle on Monday vs. the one we push to Friday. The weird noise in the car. The shoulder that's been bugging us for a month.

Thermography imaging lives in that same "check in early" mindset. It's a radiation-free, non-invasive way to monitor what's happening beneath the surface, before symptoms get loud enough to demand attention.

No judgment either way. I'm just genuinely curious. Drop an A (schedule the scan) or B (wait and see) in the comments. πŸ’›

They expected confirmation. The scan showed something else.

That's the sentence I hear most often from the vets, farriers, and bodyworkers who start using thermography in their workflow. They walk in with a clinical picture already in mind. Palpation told them one story. Gait told them another. The scan was supposed to be the final nod of agreement.

Then the thermal image fills in the margins.

A secondary heat pattern in the opposite shoulder. A quiet asymmetry in the hindquarter the horse isn't reacting to yet. A loading pattern that explains why the original issue keeps coming back.

None of that replaces what a skilled professional already sees with their hands and eyes. It adds a layer of physiological visibility that palpation simply can't reach, because heat asymmetry shows up before behavior does.

The professionals who stay with it tell me the same thing eventually. Thermography stopped being the last check in their assessment and became one of the first inputs. The sequence changes. The case opens up earlier.

If you work with horses professionally and you're curious how thermal imaging could sit alongside your current workflow, send me a message. Happy to walk you through what a session looks like and what it tends to surface.
